UPDATED: Mexican Restaurant Coming to Old Native Space

UPDATE: Decaturish reports the restaurant is actually called “Dos Madres Cantina”. That’s why I couldn’t find the website.  It’s here!

On the agenda for tonight’s Decatur City Commission meeting, an alcoholic beverage license for Los Tres Amigos, a new restaurant taking over the old Native space in the 340 West Ponce de Leon Avenue building.  Decaturish

Decaturish reports that the restaurant’s website describes the venture as “…Decatur’s new restaurant featuring Mexican and Latin cuisine. We hope to be another local favorite for Mexican food lovers of all ages.”.  I wasn’t able to locate the website in a quick search, so if anyone can find it, feel free to chime in!

  1. http://www.dosmadrescantina.com/

Mexican/Latin American food becoming the new frozen yogurt of Decatur?

    1. “Becoming?” I remember having this debate back when Big Tex opened (though admittedly, they have since dropped most of the Mex in their original Tex-Mex identity). And again with Hola. Little has changed. I think we’re pretty well saturated with Mexican/Latin options, so I certainly have concerns as to the viability of this place. But I wish them luck, and will happily give them a try. Glad to have something going in that space besides cobwebs and weeds, for sure.

  2. Decaturish says it is to be called Dos Madres Cantina – and seems to be associated with Mama Nifa’s – which to my recollection is associated with George Rorhig the building owner – who also is associated with Azio’s and little Azoio’s – the original tenant of the space. So I would expect : competent , corporate and common.

    1. I would occasionally go to Mama Ninfa’s when I worked downtown. I don’t remember it being anything else than the “plate of mush” Mexican that people seem to love. From the menu, it looks like Dos Madres is something more than that. We’ll give it a try for sure, but right now we’re all in at Calle Latina.

  3. Um, no – imho there are not too many Mexican/Latin restaurants in Decatur. Don’t forget that in Mexico – they eat Mexican food every day, and for us Mex food fans– there can never be too many options. I have not warmed to Big Tex, as I perceive it to be too franchise-ee, and not traditional enough for my tastes. Hola was doomed for obvious reasons — menu too big, rookie wait staff etc. That leaves Taqueria. I’m a huge fan of Taqueria and like everyone else – go there multiple times/week. Super stoked to have another potential option on the horizon.

    1. Curious about your Big Tex comment. I’m lukewarm on the place for several reasons, but still patronize it every so often. I’m not sure what you mean by “franchise-ee,” unless having one other restaurant with a completely different menu (Fox Bros. BBQ) makes a franchise. Unless you’re using that as shorthand for “place with big portions and crazy crap screwed to the walls,” in which case I’d hone your terms a little.

And again, you can drop it from any “Mexican/Latin” discussion anyway because they more or less scrubbed their menu of any Mexican inspired dishes a couple years ago.

  4. Of all the concepts to choose, within blocks of Taqueria del Sol, Calle Latina, Raging Burrito, and even Chipotle… best of luck to them!

    1. Don’t forget MarBar and Las Brasas not too far away. And then two more Ameri-Mex restaurants in Oakhurst. Still, I’ll give Two Mammas a try. Looking forward to it!

  5. What happened to the Istanblue outpost that was supposed to be going there? Would’ve loved to have something like that, as we still don’t have really good Middle Eastern within the City (and no, I’m not knocking Larry’s, it’s just not in the same league as Mezza or similar places). *sigh* Oh, well.

      1. You know, I don’t really lump Persian food in with “Middle Eastern” food (although I suppose I should, given that Iran can be said to be in the Middle East). I’m talking falafel, grilled halloumi, sfiheh, and shwarma…Colbeh’s delish, but doesn’t have those!

And I do like Lawrence’s (I call them “Larry’s”), but to me, they’re more of a fast-food sort of ME option. I’m wishing a place more like Mezza (on LaVista) could’ve moved in there…

      1. Greek food is Mediterranean, not Middle Eastern. I do love me some Med Grill, but they’re still outside COD. Not far, I realize, but on the nights when I’d rather walk to dinner than drive…also, they don’t have alcohol. I love Lebanese wines, especially with mezze!

          1. +1. Their hummus is sublime.
As a matter of fact, everything I’ve ever order there is yummy. Love Cafe Agora!

    1. I would rather see Laughing Seed Cafe from Asheville open a second location.

    2. I was thinking of emailing the owner about the Ruby Tuesdays space… Perfect for a Cafe Sunflower.

  6. The Decaturish headline was “New Mexican Restaurant Coming To Decatur” and I thought we would be getting Frito pie and fry bread.

    1. Thought the same thing but knew that there was no way we could be so lucky as to get blue corn tortillas and posole here. Love, love, love fry bread. But never did acquire a taste for Frito pie.

      1. Try Agave in Cabbagetown. Green chile stew, posole, green chile meatloaf, red, green, or Christmas on just about everything. No biscochitos or sopaipillas, but chile pecan brittle for dessert. Decatur-related, Mezcalito’s offers sotol.

Only a couple more weeks until green chile season kicks off…

        1. Always meant to try that; thanks for reminding me. Time to get out of the Decatur bubble every once in a while, now that kiddies are big, and try something OOD.

  7. I wish Garlic never left that space. Their green pumpkin curry was one of my favorite dishes.

    1. My daughter still laments that her favorite Tom Yum coconut soup is gone – that was her favorite meal in Decatur. The one at Green Ginger has taken its place, but just isn’t as good as Garlic’s.

I also liked Native the few times we ate there – it was great to find a restaurant without a wait on a Saturday (obviously this lead to their downfall.) I really liked the rabbit stew they had.

I can’t see us going to Dos Madres – we already have Mezcalitos, Tacquieria and MarBar to satisfy our Mexican fix.

  8. From what I understand about Dos Madres, it’s aiming to be a more family-friendly Mexican option than what’s currently in Decatur. You know, a place that actually has high chairs and coloring pages for the little ones, but also serves the kind of quality food we expect in Decatur. (and I asked about the Ninfa’s connection…it’s one of the business managers, NOT the chef/cook)

Big plus is that one of the owners grew up in Decatur and is raising a family here. Sounds like it’s worth a shot.
