Drone Video of Decatur Fireworks
Decatur Metro | July 7, 2014 | 9:30 amDrone Flying Over Decatur Fireworks from Matt Sloane on Vimeo.
Some of you asked about a drone flying over the Decatur fireworks last Friday. Well, here’s the video! Amazing angles.

Well I dreamed I saw the silver space ships flying
In the yellow haze of the sun
There were children crying
And colors flying
All around the chosen ones.

Oooooooo. Aaahhhhhh.
We were watching the fireworks from the corner of Commerce and Swanton and saw the drone’s running lights before and during the show. Was the topic of a lot of conversations in the crowd. Great to see the video from it.
The drone negatively affected my view of the fireworks, and this video and its sorry musical accompaniment is not worth suffering the interference.
You see the world through your cynical eyes
You’re a troubled young man I can tell
You’ve got it all in the palm of your hand
But your hand’s wet with sweat and your head needs a rest

That’s right people, two posts in one thread. But I just couldn’t help myself on this one.
I don’t mean to be an old fuddy-duddy but someone flying this over Decatur and filming us really creeps me out.
What if there was a hardware failure and it fell on someone?
I hate to hear myself say this… but I think we need some government regulation on drones. How do I know Matt Sloane is performing the necessary maintenance to make sure something with fast spinning propellers is safe over my head.
Good question. How big is a drone? How much does one weigh? How sharp are its propellers? Could it crush a baby? A dog? A coyote? A Prius? Do the people operating drones pass any tests? Or can they be as reckless as the kids with remote control big wheels?
And depending on how good the drones are, can helicopter moms delegate to them? Teens are going to have to find indoor places to drink, smoke, make out, and play hookey, am I right?
I recognize this drone. It’s about 1.5Lbs. All plastic. Plastic propellers, Auto go to home if it loses signal from the controller.
Based on the aerodynamics it would scratch your Prius if it died in mid air.
Only 8 minutes of flight so not really good for cruising around in. You most likely can find the operator near by.
The FAA is expected to have rulings out by November on Drones that are under 55 Lbs. However they lost some earlier battles before and are appealing to courts. So, no. They are not regulated yet by government.
When I was into RC planes you needed a million dollar liability policy to fly at a club field. It was void if you did something as stupid as fly over a crowd of people.
Barring any controls on this- next year there will be at least three of them fighting over the crowd’s heads for a good spot.
A popular one holds a GoPro Hero which will hurt if it falls on you.
Wow. Now helicopter moms have to worry about helicopters falling on their children’s heads.
But your referring to gas powered RC…
These are electric, plastic and weigh nothing.
I’m referring to electric aircraft as well. Hobby RC flying rules allow up to 55lbs. I don’t think it’s a bad idea to regulate RC flying over or near a crowded area.
This anonymous person took it upon him or herself to judge the risks they imposed on others without notice and that is not a workable long term policy.
True story: After my annual eye exam in Midtown today, my optometrist mentioned to another patient in the waiting room that his family watched the fireworks in Decatur last weekend. He hesitantly said they were OK, it was convenient to get to and all, but that what really annoyed him, and many others standing around him, was that everyone kept having to move around to find a clear spot… because there were too many trees in the way.
My head snapped back in laughter like a PEZ dispenser.
