  1. I want to know what the woman is telling Kyle Williams in his ad to the left. He looks shocked.

    1. “fiber optic is all well and fine, but we were promised flying cars and domestic robots!”

      1. “Put the lime in the coconut and drink it all up…”

        Yep, totally.

    2. That looks like Mayor Elizabeth Wilson. Kyle is smart enough to listen to her as much as possible.

    3. “Bowties are for toddlers at Easter or for TV commentators who want to look puckish. I don’t care what Doctor Who said.”

      OR

“Seriously, what’s up with that smear mailer your PAC sent out?”

  2. May is National Bike Month! Visit http://www.decaturga.com/biking to see what Decatur Active LIving is doing and join us!

  3. Anyone know why the road construction signs have been posted along College Avenue around Renfroe Middle School? They look rather permanent.

    1. Covington Hwy/College Ave. will be re-paved in the coming weeks: http://www.decaturish.com/2014/05/road-work-avondale-warns-closures/

  4. Anyone know a trustworthy college student or someone looking to make some money by crashing at my place for a week and taking care of my animals while I am away? This could lead to a fairly regular gig…

    1. I don’t know a specific person but perhaps Agnes Scott has a “jobs” office or bulletin board?

      1. Excellent! Email DM for my email address/phone number if you would. Thanks!

      1. Will do. Thanks! Wait….like the phone book? They still have those? 🙂

    2. She’s not a college student, but she watches the animals on our street, is a responsible adult and loves animals. She lives and works in Decatur. you can contact me trish at hoffshouse dot com if you want her info. She can surely give you several references, from our neighbors.

  5. We are looking for someone to come till up the small lawn area in front of our house and reseed it. And then make regular visits every couple months to do what needs to be done to keep it growing. Left to our own devices we are apparently unable to keep grass from reverting to a sea of weeds.

    1. Depending on the type of grass you have or want, this may not be the right time of year to seed. I use TurfMasters. They treat 7 times a year, and aerate and re-seed in the fall.

      1. Probably just Fescue. We need something shade tolerant. The Zoysia sod from three years ago was expensive and never really took hold, though admittedly we probably didn’t do enough for it.

        1. Grass doesn’t grow in shade. Plant mondo grass or go with a shade tolerant perennial bed like hostas, Solomon’s Seal, ferns with coleus for color.

  6. Is anyone else as frustrated with the recent restriping of dekalb avenue near where is passes over the interstate around GSU? My 3 minute commute for this stretch has turned into a 30 minute commute trying to get home at 5:30. Not only does it back up all the way into the city, I have seen many near head on collisions with people not knowing how to use the now center turn lane. Making the center lane a turn only lane has screwed everything up. Instead of creating less traffic, our fine traffic engineers have created a more dangerous street with more traffic. Atlanta once again at its best…

    1. No idea why they did this. That area is already congested in the morning with people cutting in from the left-hand turn lane at GSU. I’ve ended up going to 85 and Freedom Parkway, even though it’s several miles longer.

    2. Also frustrated. It was already a disaster going into the city–yesterday it was a disaster leaving as well. Going into the city, the left turn lane was simply a lane for those intending to go straight who jumped in (often in the middle of the intersection) at Grady, after refusing to wait in line with the rest of us peons.

Why is there a center turn lane across the entire bridge over the connector? Nowhere to turn!

I simply don’t get it it.

      1. I have emailed the city of Atlanta about this on Monday – they replied saying they would respond in 24 hours but I never heard from them again. Also emailed Decatur Patch to see if they would do an article on it.. they are looking into it. Not sure who to complain to about this but it appears its here to stay. Will now have to find another route … maybe that was their goal to begin with.

        1. Freaking idiots! How is that turn lane supposed to help? I hope they don’t plan on doing this masterpiece of engineering the whole route of DeKalb Ave. I for one prefer the reversible lanes versus not having two lanes during rush hour.
Also, McClendon Ave; I ride my bike a lot through this area. I have never seen bike lanes start up and stop like they now do on McClendon. I really like the idea of being more bike friendly, but gee-wiz; doesn’t make sense to me.

            1. It’s pretty simple: accept federal highway funding, follow federal highway standards.

              1. Don’t understand. What federal funds were accepted? Federal funds are needed to restripe & remove a lane of traffic?

            2. Oh, good–now I know who to email to express my thanks for the massive clusterf–k that DeKalb Ave/Decatur Street has become. I’m going to wear my teeth down to nubs after I’m done gritting them every am & pm the way I’ve started doing!

          1. The new bike lanes on McClendon appear exclusively on the small section that is part of unincorporated Dekalb. They end (to the west) at Ridgewood, where the Atlanta city limit is. Their appearance (and sudden end) took me by surprise last week.

            1. This is probably not an explanation for the strange striping. All of McClendon is in the City of Atlanta. The city limit sign is at the corner of the intersection with Ridgecrest, where McClendon ends.

              1. You are right. Brain fart. Wrong Ridge. That whole of McClendon is both in Dekalb and in Atlanta.

    3. Yes, it is a nightmare, and yes, they want you to go a different way. They also plan to decrease lanes around the Capitol. Their goal must be total gridlock.

      1. Atlanta is doing the same things Decatur has done and will continue to do (reducing W. Ponce from 4 lanes to 2 being the poster child). Maybe they put more emphasis on the quality of life for their citizens who live on or around that street than they do on commuters who pass through? Undoubtedly the traffic calming Atlanta enacted in the GSU campus area of Decatur Street was done to make the area safer for pedestrians. It also made it much harder to traverse that section by car and lengthened the commute time for people traveling between Decatur and downtown Atlanta.

        1. Smith hit the nail on the head. N. McDonough Street in downtown Decatur is another example.

        2. huh?? This is an overpass.. who lives on an overpass??? So you think its better to create traffic here – to the point where commuters will now find alternate routes home most likely through real neighborhoods instead of overpasses? I’m all for traffic calming but not at this particular stretch – it creates backups into the city that cause worse problems.

          1. “So you think its better to create traffic here – to the point where commuters will now find alternate routes…?”

Uh, YEAH! It’s not about the overpass but about what’s on the other side of it, a school with 30,000+ sudents! With their recent expansions and drive to keep more students on campus, there absolutely IS a commendable goal to calm and divert traffic around that area!

I drive to and from downtown Atlanta during rush hour often. Even before the recent changes, for years I would simply divert to the north at Boulevard or to the south at Grant, depending where on downtown I was going. The real loser is me, as more people will learn these shortcuts that won’t be so short any longer…

            1. Then I’ll be seeing you on the neighborhood side roads along with the rest of the city commuters…. maybe they will end up reducing the width of those roads to just bike lanes and no cars… love our idiot Atlanta traffic engineers. Feel more sorry for the neighborhood kids now having to dodge cars racing through their streets. DeKalb avenue is for cars and moving traffic to and from – not clogging it up to now divert to neighborhoods.

                1. Me too, brianc! I use it whenever I can. I even take it to court in Atlanta when the weather permits. It’s unfortunately just not an option when the temps get significantly over 80 degrees or it’s raining. The best part is when I get such incredulous looks from other lawyers, court folks or clients when I tell them I take Marta.

              1. Huh? Boulevard to Ponce or any of the E-W streets in between is not some neighborhood side road with kids playing in the middle of it. It is a major thoroughfare which is much more appropriate for commuter traffic than the middle of a dadgum university. Ditto for Grant or Hill to MLK or Memorial. So I really have no idea what you seem so concerned about…

            2. I’m also very concerned about my Boulevard “shortcut.” I’ve noticed lately that Dekalb/Decatur has been backed up almost to Boulevard but thankfully most people aren’t turning. I’m hoping that they’re scared to go through “that neighborhood” and I can keep my daily commute at its normal time.

          2. bums, pigeons, rats…

i’m guessing your opinion was not considered when they decided to do this work, but maybe that was not an oversight. maybe they had reasons or concerns or goals that involved a larger range of things than just the car throughput of the overpass. maybe it’s part of a larger traffic plan. then again, maybe chris christie ordered it just to piss off decatur to atlanta commuters who didn’t vote for him. or they just have no idea as to what they’re doing. my guess is that there’s probably a good reason, albeit one that doesn’t benefit everyone.

            1. +1. As a general rule, I don’t value any critique of government endeavor that begins with “These idiots…”.

That’s not a blanket defense, of course. Idiocy does indeed exist. But it’s the job of a person to think about themselves. It’s the job of government to think about everyone. So I’m guessing the balance of trade-offs crossed their minds.

              1. Exactly. It’s not the right of every single person to drive as fast as they can as far as they can whenever they can. You do have the right to choose your route, however. Traffic engineers have, for the past 75 years, tried to make it easy on drivers at every turn. Luckily, for humans, our planning process often now considers more than just how fast you can drive your car from point A to point B. Particularly when a) there are 30,000 students getting around on foot in the area in which there are cars and b) there are actual commute options along the same corridor as the road. That is, we have a 4 billion dollar investment that runs parallel to DeKalb Ave. Wouldn’t it make sense to prioritize that mode and the pedestrians that walk to it, rather than dump new money into that which makes it easier for people to ignore where we already put our money?

                1. In other words, we want to force you onto Marta. That’s what this is really about, isn’t it?

                  1. No, it’s not some grand conspiracy theory. It’s called maximizing resources. (Actually I have no idea what is really behind it, but I’d like to think that maybe, for once in the modern history of Atlanta, a plan was made that took into account something besides how fast we can make our cars go).
By the way, vehicle miles traveled per capita is dropping (has been since before the recession) and transit commuting is on the rise. So I don’t think I’m out of bounds to encourage prioritizing our resources in a way that emphasizes transit (somewhat) at least along our few transit corridors.
We’ve made a multi-billion dollar investment – shouldn’t we enact policies support it?

                    1. DEM – I’m sure that the UN is behind this – and I’m sure that you could take it up with them.

                    2. Thanks Geoff. I’ll hop on Amtrak right now, and in a short 18 hours I’ll be there to take this up with Ban Kai-Moon himself. I’ll bike to the Amtrak station, of course.

                  2. “Force” is an exaggeration, and there are other alternatives besides MARTA, but yes, the era of driver convenience in urban areas being the main goal is thankfully ending.

                    1. Not much of an exaggeration. It seems pretty clear that part of the motivation here is to make an existing and long-established car commuting route less convenient — perhaps a lot less so — so that car commuters will take Marta instead. Maybe that’s not being “forced” onto Marta, but it’s not too far off.

                    2. DEM, you also have the option of, oh I don’t know, learning another route to work.

                  3. C’mon people, I’m pretty disappointed that how long this is taking to devolve into cars versus bikes. Must be the nice weather or something…

                    1. I’ve been impressed it hasn’t gone there yet 🙂

I bike or ride MARTA 90% of my days. Today I biked from Georgia Tech to a meeting at Emory, before biking home to Decatur. The looks I get when people (doctors, professors) see my bag and ask if I biked, are priceless. They seem to equate biking from midtown to Emory as something as big a deal as running a marathon.

The reality is a rush hour drive from Georgia Tech to Decatur can be 35 minutes. Or longer on a bad day. I can bike it in 40. MARTA in similar time if I time the trains right.

          3. Not to mention making it even more difficult getting to a major HOSPITAL!

    4. They made it a center turn lane about 2 years ago and quickly went back to the old way. It is just stupid that it was restriped again

  7. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good kids’ eye doctor? I searched DM archives but didn’t find anything specific to kids. I see that Decatur Eye Care gets good reviews but it doesn’t look like they take our insurance. Thanks very much!

    1. http://www.choa.org/childrens-hospital-services/pediatric-surgery-georgia/specialties/ophthalmology

    2. Sorry if this replied twice, trying to get both links in the same message.

Both Emory & CHOA have pediatric opthamology specialists:
      Emory: http://www.eyecenter.emory.edu/clinical_specialties/pediatric_ophthalmology.htm

      CHOA: http://www.choa.org/childrens-hospital-services/pediatric-surgery-georgia/specialties/ophthalmology

      1. Amy Hutchinson from Emory Eye Center is a former neighbor and Oakhurst resident. We have thankfully never had to use her, but she is an extremely nice person and a very competent doctor. She’s not an optometrist who performs regular eye exams, but if your child ever needs eye surgery, she is the one to go to.

        1. Amy was my preemie daughter’s eye doctor from NICU until she was cleared at age one. She is great. I don’t think she does exams for kids without risk or issues, tough

    3. I had a positive experience with Dr. Safra. Was not pressured to purchase glasses from them.

      1. Thank you. That one is actually in the network. Thanks everyone else too!

  8. Does anyone know off the top of their head if Dekalb County water is hard or soft?

      1. Water is actually extraordinarily under-priced in this country. Don’t worry: we’ll get to pay more soon. http://www.dekalbwatershed.com/ConsentDecree.html

        1. That’s my concern. 10% increases the last what, three years; with scheduled 10% increases for another 2-3 years? Plus, increases in GA Power rates, food, taxes to pay for the dismantling of our healthcare system; good times.

          1. Strap it up Mic – it’s only going to get worse if we don’t get our heads back on straight

          2. “taxes to pay for the dismantling of our healthcare system”? What?

            1. What AMB said. You know perfectly well “what” they mean. Don’t get ’em going or we’ll have to just abandon this edition of FFAF.

    1. I know that the hardness for Gwinnett County runs around 20 milligrams per liter or just over 1 grain per gallon. That is considered to be very soft water. DeKalb would be right around that level too since they withdraw just downstream of Lanier… basically the same water source and they use similar treatment processes.

      1. Thank you! I was considering getting a softener filter for the taps but doesn’t sound necessary

  9. Anybody have any thoughts on the primary race for Sheriff, particularly as to who would be the best candidate to rally around against you know who? At a quick glance the best choice seems to be Jeff Mann, but I’m just not ready to make the pick,

      1. I am not a retired cop, but I also support Mann, mainly because he’s the only candidate with any name recognition and signs up around town who’s initials are not VJ. On the other hand, I’m secretly hoping that V****n J***s wins because fu*k it, it’d be hilarious, and we would surely make The Daily Show because of it…

        1. If he would pledge to appoint Cynthia as deputy sheriff, I’d vote for him, because why not? At least we wouldn’t be surprised by the inevitable indictments.

    1. I still can’t believe VJ is running for sheriff. I would prefer my law enforcement officers to have law enforcement experience and less criminal experience than the people they arrest.

      1. Well, at least VJ knows criminal activity when he sees it…

    2. Come meet Jeff Mann on Tuesday, May 6: 6pm at the Wylde Center/Oakhurst Community Garden.

        1. Yes, please. Contact me through DM or come Tuesday and I’ll happily take them.

          1. Melissa. I’m a member at the garden and I’m heading over now to check things out before heading out of town. I’ll put the extra signs downstairs with all the tools.

    3. This is very helpful and I would like to hear more. My only source of info so far is the nice piece over on Decaturish. In that piece, Melvin Mitchell was the strongest, but that’s just in terms of the answers to the Decaturish questions. (Well, I didn’t bother to read VJ’s answers because I already know too much.) Jeff Mann seemed to confuse, or at least conflate, the issues of unemployment and vacancies in his office which seemed weird. Maybe he was just trying to get whatever forum he could for the issues of officer salaries?

  10. It is legal or illegal in the City of Decatur to use the fire hydrant to fill up one’s back yard swimming pool?

    1. It’s legal and recommended, but you need to get a hydrant meter from the county to do it. You’ll also need a hose that fits the hydrant.

      1. If this action were being performed legally with a hydrant meter….where would the be located? Would it be hooked to the hydrant at the beginning of the hose, or at the end of the hose where the water is exiting?

        1. I haven’t actually done this, but the meter connects to the hydrant then the hose goes from the hydrant to the pool. The water rate is cheaper obviously (there’s no sewer charge) and the pool fills about 20 million times faster than it would with a garden hose.

          1. So then, could I assume that the house I saw recently with a big-honking hose hooked up directly to the hydrant (with NO Meter of any sort connected to the hose or hydrant) was illegally filling up his/her pool from the hydrant?

        2. A hydrant meter is hooked up to the meter. I think you have to put down a deposit and pay for the water you use, but it doesn’t include sewage. You need a really good wrench, too.

          1. Construction crews do it all the time without permission ( for example, paving crews filling up the tank on their asphalt rollers).

  11. Huge Neighborhood Yard Sale

    1. My daughter sees Dr. Gower at Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat of Atlanta at the Scottish Rite location. We’ve had a good experience so far. She needed tubes in her ears. It was easy to get a consultation appointment and they were able to do the surgery 3 days later. We have our first follow up visit on Monday, but results have been good so far. http://www.childrensent.com or 404-255-2033

    2. Yes,. Email me and I will give you someone excellent but I need to know a little more about the issue. Baby Nellie had serious developmental ear issues from her extreme prematurity. I would email you but the phone is currently being used for time out timing

      1. Thanks! Off to email. Hopefully you are out of time out now 😉

  12. we had a large tree limb over our house taken down yesterday, tree company took what they could but we still have a lot of brush piled up that needs to be removed. any suggestions on someone that will do that?

  13. Does anyone have any experience with and/or recommendations for roofers that install metal roofs for residential homes? Thanks!

  14. Anybody know what happened at Clairemont and Scott around 645 / 7 last night?

    1. A nasty looking accident. Drove by a good hour or more after it happened and they were still cleaning up. There was a car still there with massive damage. Completely crushed. If there wasn’t at least one fatality, I’d be amazed. And hugely relieved.

      1. Ugh. I was hoping that wasn’t the case. Thought maybe a downed tree or gas leak. Hope everyone was OK.

      2. Van turning left onto Clairemont from Scott collided with a car coming up Scott from town. Driver had to be cut out of the car, but was moving his arms and legs and talking with emergency personnel on his way to the ambulance. The car wasn’t crushed, they cut the top off to get him out. His passengers were OK, as were the people in the van..

        1. Thanks for that additional info–good to know everyone’s going to make it.

  15. I try to read these comments each week to get a sense of what’s going on in the community. (It’s one of several ways I do this, but this one is more effective than most.)

I’d be glad to look into any issue that’s of interest to you, provided that there’s a story there.

Contact email is same as in the comment above.

  16. Please come by and see Oakhurst Community Choir perform at the bandstand in Decatur’s courthouse square this Saturday between 3pm and 5pm, as part of the Sidewalk Saturdays program. The theme is ‘Maytime Madrigals’ – songs of springtime romance and merrymaking!

Oakhurst Community Choir was established in 2013 as an independent, non-audition choir for teens and adults. We welcome new members – especially men! Musical genres vary. For more information, email [email protected]

  17. Anybody know what those crazy pipes are on Scott Blvd near Church? It’s got to be something under pressure — natural gas maybe?

    1. Massive ongoing pipeline project for Atlanta Gas. It has had parts of Medlock under siege from mud and noise and trucks for months.

      1. Is it the same thing that was going on over on Katie Kerr by Avondale? Because jeeze, that thing took forever and was loud and messy as all get out. I do not envy the folks out on Scott who get to deal with it now.

    2. I also noticed the other day they have put another large one up on N. Druid Hills Rd. right next to someone’s house. I know gas has to come from somewhere but I would be so pssd if I had to look at that 24/7 out my window. Talk about killing resale

  18. Any recommendations for a pediatric psychiatrist who has extensive experience with ADHD meds? We would prefer closer to Decatur. The Buckhead drive is getting tedious.

    1. Try Garnet King at Todd Antin’s office. She’s great at managing meds for this, http://www.dekalbmedical.org/find-doctor/a/antin-todd-m

    2. Not sure he is taking new clients, so would need to check, but Eric Fier is fantastic, amazing, incredible, and any other superlative you want to use. Located on North near Ponce City Market:
      http://www.ericfiermd.com/

  19. I had Lasik eye surgery over 15 years ago. The doctor made my eyes bifocal–one sees clearly up close and one is for far distances. Somehow, it works and I have had great vision. Now I need an update or contacts that will adjust like my eyes do now. Has anyone had to re-do their surgery because of worsening vision and is the cost the same as an original surgery? Or does anyone know if I could even get contacts for my situation. I tried a pair of glasses and they didn’t work at all.

  20. It seems like every on-air quote from a supporter during this WABE pledge drive has been from a Decatur resident.

    1. Pledge Drive ends in less than three hours. Yay! No more Lois Reitzes turning up on the weekend airwaves for six months!
And there’s the couple in Antarctica from Tucker. Or the woman from Ansley Park who directs the Paideia musicals.

      1. Since moving to high ground downtown, I go for days at a time without tuning in WABE. If I’d been in touch with the wealth of public radio programming available in this area, I’d have put a honking big antenna on the roof 15 years ago. Between the station in Warm Springs, the ones at Clark Atlanta U, Ga State and Ga Tech, and the L5P folks, there’s plenty going on most of the time, that ranges far beyond the narrow confines of taste and interest available at WABE. They are not the only game in town, they just act like it.

        1. Now that I have a car with Bluetooth, an unlimited data plan, and the Sirius XM app, my terrestrial radio days appear to be pretty much numbered.

        2. “They [WABE] are not the only game in town, they just act like it.”

Indeed: WRAS to start broadcasting GPB’s daytime news and information programming next month.

          1. Link to article regarding GPB’s radio debut in Atlanta:

            http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/news/2014/05/06/wras-album-88-switching-to-daytime-news-format.html

          2. I thought that was good news until I learned it’s the ENTIRE DAY from 5am-7pm. It’s a bad deal and a huge disappointment.

            1. There will be what, 6 1/2 hours of identical programming daily between Morning Edition and ATC?. GSU really gave away the store, too.

              1. I read somewhere that it’s unlikely they will be airing Morning Edition or All Things Considered.

                1. Rodney Ho says an insider told him that they will be broadcasting Morning Edition and ATC on WRAS.

              2. At least the national programming will have different local hosts. But that’s small, small consolation. It smells like some kind of boondoggle but I don’t know enough about how it all works to figure it out.

            2. Seems like buying and selling the 9 a.m. to 4 or 5 slot would have been bigger bang for buck for both parties- Atlanta audiences get to ditch the Lois Reitzes/music content, and the students would lose less radio time.

  21. Just saw on the news that data coming from “have an affair” website, Ashley Madison, ranks Decatur as the metro’s second largest concentration of men or women looking to have an affair.

    Y’all get it on!

    1. Guess the hard work of the Decatur Active Loving Division is coming to fruition.

      1. Gotta be Postal. Juicy gossip seems to be at all all-time low in COD.

  22. Disappointed in Kyle Williams campaign’s latest mail out.

It is certainly fair game to question/criticize the opponent’s voting record but superimposing a photo of Nathan Deal next to her and implying that she supports Tea Party Republican and right wing extremist agendas…..seriously ?

I am sad to see this kind of campaign tactic.

    1. I was a little surprised too. I think that type of campaigning backfires, especially if a good proportion of your constituency is highly educated, progressive professionals. I’d think this could change votes in the wrong direction. But someone must think it’s a good idea.

      1. I would respond much more favorably to something saying , “I disagree with my opponent’s votes on the following bills….here’s my view and how I would have voted…… “

      2. It’s not smart campaigning, because anyone who checks Elena Parent’s record will find that she’s extremely progressive and bears no political resemblance to Deal. IMO Kyle should stick to telling us what he stands for, not misrepresenting his opponent’s record.

    2. WAS it sponsored by Kyle Williams? The flyer I got said it was sponsored by a water coalition…I cannot find it now.

      1. That is a good question . I actually checked the sponsorship before my original post.

My flyer clearly says “paid for by Friends of Kyle Williams”. The campaign website, says “please make your checks payable to Friends of Kyle Williams ” so yes, it is his own campaign flyer.

On the back of the flyer there is fine print about a water coalition but that is a citation for one of the statements in the text.

    3. Yup. I’m somewhat tempted to hoof it over to his campaign HQ and request a clarification on that flyer. It absolutely turned me off on him as a candidate – I know it actually came from “FRIENDS OF KYLE” or whatever, but no. Not cool.

      1. I Googled each of the bills cited in the fine print. Found out who besides Elena Parent and the “right wing extremists” supported each one.

    4. Parent did something similar:

“Parent campaign in a push poll telling voters Williams accepted money from an organization that supports such U.S. Senators as Republican John McCain.”

      -GA Voice article

      1. Wow, the plot thickens. I’m disappointed in both.

Also, is that quote a complete sentence? I’m not quite understanding it.

      2. Political blog called Peach Pundit has an article written back in March that mentions this situation.

I find the title of the piece , “The Scrum for Senate 42” quite fitting.

  23. I want to recommend Jacob to everyone for your pressure washing needs. personable, polite teenager who did an excellent job on my deck. (404) 309-9863, thanks, Deb

  24. Anyone know a older kid with the patience and endurance for heavy weeding? Detail-oriented preferably. Husband hurt his back and we have 4-5 hrs of weeding ($20 hr?).

    1. I would love to help weed.
I am the kid who does pressure washing also. You can reach me at 404-309-9863.
      Thanks,
      Jacob

  25. Anyone got suggestions on who can relatively cheaply throw down wood chips and weed a front lawn?

    Besides me, obviously?

  26. our family spent the weekend with the kids and parents of our Cub Scout pack at Rock Eagle, a 4-H center near Madison. wonderful facilities, great staff, and well-organized and presented curriculum focused, primarily, on environmental education. highly recommended if you’ve never been before.

we attended several classes specific to herpetology, ornithology, lake ecology, etc. throughout them, our instructors (typically college graduates, several pursuing advanced degrees) asked the kids lots of questions.

i could not have been more proud of our 2-5th grade kids: hands shot in the air for every question, offering accurate and (to my mind) surprisingly sophisticated answers; they also asked great questions that demonstrated a high level inquisitiveness and engagement—all which left me beaming with pride at the quality of the education all our kids are receiving.

i’ll remember this the next time we’re writing a check for our taxes.

    1. Couldn’t have said it better myself, Rick. The staff and facilities at Rock Eagle were top notch, and you’re so right about the kids. They gots some serious smarts.

Good hanging out with you and the other scout parents. These trips are always one of the highlights of each scouting season.

  27. Someone smashed the window of the Little Free Library on Glendale Ave at the back entrance to Glenlake Park =(

    1. Clearly an angry or destructive person. All you have to do is open the door to get what’s inside and it’s not like books are a lucrative item to steal. Don’t think an errant ball from the baseball field could make it that far…

Shouldn’t be hard to replace. Maybe plexiglass or similar plastic is better idea.
