Waffle House In Negotiations To Open in Downtown Decatur
Decatur Metro | April 25, 2014 | 3:00 pm
A reader wrote in yesterday with a tip that Waffle House was planning to open a location in downtown Decatur under Eddie’s Attic in the old Sammiches and Stuff/Little Shop space on North McDonough.
Responding to our inquiry, Decatur’s Asst. City Manager Lyn Menne tells DM that the city is aware that Waffle House is in negotiations for the space but is unaware of a signed lease. According to Menne, Waffle House has looked at several sites in Decatur over the years. She also notes that “Recently built new Waffle House operations near Georgia State and Georgia Tech have a more traditional design so it is a good fit for them to locate into an existing building [in Decatur] and bring back the historic character of the building.”
Stay tuned.

Probably do well there. We could use a 24/7 diner, but preferably in this location and not where the last one was (Decatur Diner?).
I liked when it was Jake’s.
Me too. Preferred the old LSOS location there too when Jakes was connected to it.
I liked Jake’s when it was Harbour House, I mean El Tesoro. Many, many happy times in that warm, friendly, gorgeous space–coffee, ice cream, creative decorations, some books, family friendly, but fun for Agnes Scott students too. Like the closing of Blue Elephant, I may never get over the closing of the original Decatur location of Jake’s.
I liked Jake’s in both of its locations. (It was the spawn of Rothschild’s in Inman Park, wasn’t it? I like Rothschild’s well enough to go by myself.) Why do we have such a spate of fro-yo and such a dearth of really good ice cream? I don’t count Stone Cold. I thought the guy was molesting the ice cream.
Man, can we convince Morelli’s to open up a location on/around the square?
Sweet fluffy lord, YES! YES!! YES!!!
Good news! Butter and Cream, opening soon at 416 Church Street. We will be serving delicious house-made ice cream and desserts. Look forward to seeing you in early June!
Man, can we convince Morelli’s to open up a location on/around the square?
Lord, he asked you twice. If he does it again he has the whole Holy Trinity covered. I don’t know Morelli’s but if it inspires that level of devotion, I’m all for it.
2 eggs over medium, bacon, wholewheat, scattered potatoes, and a cup of that swill you call coffee, please.
Cheese and Eggs with Raisin Toast. Scattered hashbrowns. Diet Coke. (The coffee will remove a layer of taste buds).
Double order of hash browns: scattered, smothered, covered and chunked. And coffee–black. Thank You Ma’am!
2 eggs scrambled with cheese, hashbrowns scattered smothered covered and diced well done, bacon, white toast, waffle, and chicken melt on the side please!
ah, i see we have a health nut among us.
This would bring me about half a mile closer to pecan waffles. Danger! Danger!
I’d love a 24 hour eatery, and the one in Tech Square is a great model for what could work in Decatur. And let’s face it, the peak weekend wait times at Pastries-A-Go-Go and Thumbs Up suggest that Decatur could easily handle another weekend breakfast place.
I’m boring. 2 eggs sunny side up, bacon, rye toast, no grits, hash browns scattered and smothered.
Their coffee sucks, but somehow it is part of what makes Waffle House unique. Because they refill it without my asking most of the time.
Would they be allowed to be open 24/7? Do ordinances allow for that down town?
Decatur Diner was.
If that had happened last year, I never would have moved. I would also weigh 900 lbs.
and hence, you also wouldn’t have been able to move.
And you’d be LARGEtowngal.
+1
Journey would have to write a new song.
This may finally be the all night place I can sit and nurse a coffee and um waffle forever and do some work in peace and quiet. It’s 10 years too late in terms of having clingy little ones that cannot let Mommy work but better late than never.
We may never leave Decatur again. Oh, and the mister says that their dark roast is the way to go.
Anyone remember Trattoria 515 in that spot? And there was a Cuban tapas place, but I don’t remember their name. Both were good but maybe ahead of the Decatur restaurant curve.
Do you think Decatur can sustain a 24 hour place? I wondered the same thing about Decatur Diner. I went there once at four o’clock in the morning and was surprised at the number of people there. But it didn’t last long enough to determine if 24 hours would really work. I look forward to enjoying a waffle.
Which was the place with the awesome oso bucco? It may have been before either of the two you mention.
If it was Osso Bucco, I’d guess Trattoria. It was owned by the same woman who owned Camille’s in Virginia-Highland, and, I think, another restaurant on Cheshire Bridge. Never tried the Osso Bucco, I generally got a simple pasta with fresh tomato sauce, and it came with a scoop of fresh handmade ricotta. nom, nom, nom. I wonder what year that was? At that time our usual stomping grounds were Va-Hi, Inman Park, Five Points, Midtown, and (God help us) Buckhead. Don’t judge us, we liked Otto’s.
I still miss Camille’s!! *sigh*
I worked there in the 90s and Bob & Camille would have the entire staff sit down to a family dinner at 5 pm. Camille died and Bob lost his heart for the business. They also did not encourage children or separate checks.
Tapas place might have been Café Montserrat?
THIS was the place with the awesome oso bucco! I loved that place. It didn’t last long enough–too early. Decatur had not yet become the mecca.
I have no memory of Cafe Montserrat. When was that?
Early 1990s, only there for a couple of years, I believe. One of the first higher end restaurants that move into Downtown Decatur in the 1990s. I believe it predated Cafe Lily, was maybe the contemporary of Cafe Alsace. European style food, not Americanized ethnic. It had a few dishes that I loved–oso bucco, polenta, and maybe an excellent flan or creme caramel. It had a bar too but don’t remember anything about it.
Cafe Alsace was Tres Bien in the early 1990s
Je ne sais pas. Il etait comme si comme ca, a mon avis.
I think Decatur could withstand a 24/7 place. We have a lot of shift workers with CNN, Emory Hospital, VA Medical Center, DeKalb Medical Center, and possibly CDC.
Decatur in 6 words: Scattered, covered, smothered, taxed, treed, schooled!
& “festivaled”
Will all the waitresses be named Trudi and Brenda?
In keeping with the absolute departure from the original topic, I’ll now add my $.02
I wish Pasta Please! was still around. Too bad the construction on the square messed them up during their critical first few months. I loved the place. Prices great, and owner was cool. The only other pasta in the area is Figo and it is really expensive and not nearly as good.
I’m showing my age here but the Cuban place was called Babalu and before that the restaurant there was called Conversations.
If only the Square Table was still around, it would be the perfect 24-hour spot! Smoking laws are relaxed after midnight, right?
Maybe we can convince them to buy dancing goats coffee?
Sacrilege! That would be like asking them to serve turkey sausage with sage that was freshly delivered from a local farmer. Soon, breakfast at Waffle House would cost $50 for 2.
I would think Agnes Scott students would love having a place to study in the middle of the night besides their rooms (where a cozy bed beckons). My roommate and I used to drive all the way to Ihop for that. This would be walking distance!
