Everybody must be out shopping! Got a lot of mine done online this morning.

My spouse has gone to the supermarket – says this is the best time of this week to go since everybody’s shopping elsewhere.

I was thinking of hitting up DeKalb Farmer’s Market for the same reason.

It was wonderfully, oddly empty Friday at 10 am.

Got there at 9 on the dot yesterday with my parents. My mom said “I don’t understand why you’re always complaining and posting on facebook about the crowds here!” We could have had shopping cart races down the aisles, it was so empty. I think this will be my new Black Friday tradition.

Mine too! I actually had time to look at everything instead of just rushing to get everything on my list.

Anybody got a recommendation on a good place to cut your own Christmas tree?

      • Skeptic says:
        November 29, 2013 at 9:52 am

        Not indie-catur – there’s a moratorium for that…

      • Diane Loupe says:
        November 29, 2013 at 12:33 pm

I’ve never done this because I once wrote a story about two children who died when their Christmas tree caught fire. But here’s some links.

Bicycle South has a tune-up special for December! Special price is $42.95. Perfect time to get your bicycle in perfect running order. Shop is located at corner of N. Decatur Rd and Clairmont since 1972. 404-636-4444

        December 1, 2013 at 10:30 am

Unfortunately, I am having a hard time separating your business and your politics. Can’t support you after your inexcusable vote for the demolition moratorium. It’s Decatur Bikes for me…

        • Diane Loupe says:
          December 2, 2013 at 3:04 pm

I think Fred’s bike shop is one of the best around, and I’m using my real name, not sniping anonymously.

          • The Walrus says:
            December 2, 2013 at 8:14 pm

Congratulations, Diane. Fred is a public figure and I wouldn’t call expressing an opinion on an elected official’s vote “sniping”. I believe that’s the type of thing a community SHOULD do.

          • smalltowngal says:
            December 2, 2013 at 9:05 pm

            Diane…
            1. The quality of the bike shop is completely irrelevant to this conversation. Walrus’s comment pertained to Fred’s vote as a Commissioner. If you don’t think that’s fair territory for critical comment, then you have a different understanding than I do of how both Decatur’s municipal government and the community actually work.

            2. You’re the one taking potshots. The fact that you use your real name doesn’t make it any more credible or any less tedious.

            • Smith says:
              December 2, 2013 at 10:32 pm

Here’s some irony for you. A couple of weeks ago we saw a bunch of complaints about too many lawyers in politics. Fred is a small businessman who chose to run for local office. It’s too bad people can’t separate the political from the rest of life. If you don’t like his politics don’t vote for him. Boycotting his business only discourages business people from entering politics. Guess what you get – more lawyers.

              • DEM says:
                December 3, 2013 at 8:06 am

Not too sure about that — it’s not like lawyers aren’t business people. They want clients, just like Bike South wants customers.

In any event, I agree with you, even as I understand where Walrus is coming from. I probably disagree with Fred about everything, but who cares about that when it comes to fixing and selling bikes? Same applies to Chik-Fil-A and Wal-Mart, in my view. Though good luck selling that in the age where everything– right down to buying toasters — is politicized.

                • The Walrus says:
                  December 3, 2013 at 8:14 am

I did say, “unfortunately, I am having a hard time.” This implies that I don’t want it to be that way. I mean, I could go into the fact that the last time I was in Bicycle South, I felt the customer service was lousy, but that’s neither here nor there. The difference between this situation and Walmart/Chik-Fil-A, however, is that the owners of those companies are not elected officials voting on laws/regulations/moratoriums that affect my life.

Smith, your concern regarding discouraging local businessfolk from entering politics is well taken. I do also agree with DEM, however, that many attorneys are also local businessfolk.

      • Billy says:
        November 29, 2013 at 5:19 pm

I do Crossfit Decatur — the one on Church.
They have a really great group of trainers there and really nice people to work out with.
I have really made a nice social group there that I really miss when I don’t go in for a workout and they make me want to show up!

Thanks. I have read it’s pricey and have been reluctant to give up my cheap in comparison gym membership. Everything I have read about it seems super cool though. I’ll tell them Billy sent me!

Try something a little different. Decatur Boxing Club. Get fit, not hit. Super trainers, collegian atmosphere, old school Philly meets Decatur. All kinds of specials this month! On New Street behind 3 Taverns.

Thanksgiving smoked turkey from Fox Bros. was oh so juicy and delicious! I thought the 3 hour reheating process would dry it out, but nope. Juicy.

Everything we had was amazing and so complex in flavors and thoughtfully prepared.
Not sure how I am going to eat elsewhere.

yup, i know you’re gonna be super proud of your new flat panel tv and xbox, and there’s no better way to advertise that fact than putting their boxes out on the curb on trash day. just remember when you do, you’re also saying to thieves, “rob my house next”.

PROTIP: park the boxes at your neighbors 😉

      • Laura says:
        December 1, 2013 at 8:51 am

We have chosen to drive such boxes to the recycling center at YDFM.

      • Keith F says:
        December 1, 2013 at 12:42 pm

What a game and such an incredible finish. Don’t know how any game can be much more exciting than that one.

      • J_T says:
        December 2, 2013 at 8:27 am

I was sick and didn’t go to the game. The wife took a friend instead. The friend is an Alabama fan. Not sure if the friend is still a friend. War Damn Eagle!

        • Keith F says:
          December 3, 2013 at 10:54 am

I do have to mention that my alma mater, Iowa State University, pounded Auburn last night on the basketball court. No Auburn angels in attendance at THAT game. Go Cyclones!

          • J_T says:
            December 3, 2013 at 12:07 pm

            Auburn plays basketball? Really?

            • Keith F says:
              December 3, 2013 at 1:21 pm

Yes, and can you imagine being Rod Bramblett and having to go to Ames, Iowa to call a 30-point blowout after making such awesome calls for the football team?

            • Keith F says:
              December 3, 2013 at 1:23 pm

              Not since Charles Barkley.

          • DawgFan says:
            December 3, 2013 at 12:28 pm

The angels only follow football in SEC country.

            • Keith F says:
              December 3, 2013 at 1:19 pm

SEC football? You mean the farm teams for the NFL?

    12. brianc says:
      December 1, 2013 at 3:18 pm

I don’t recall a game ever ending on such a play. Auburn seems to have the angels on their side this season.

      • J_T says:
        December 2, 2013 at 8:28 am

Those angels better be on either the Michigan State or Duke sidelines next Saturday!

    13. brianc says:
      December 2, 2013 at 6:17 pm

Duke will need a lot more than angels. Michigan State though…

      • J_T says:
        December 3, 2013 at 10:42 am

Duke could have a Tallahassee grand jury on its side.
