I am in mourning. Yet another huge healthy oak tree being cut down on the front of a neighbors lot (edited: too specific) as I type this.
Wanted to say thanks to them for taking us all another notch down the road towards human extinction.
We laud ourselves for being such a progressive society in Decatur but then I see yet another, and another and another example of this (with no replacements) and think we are a pretty darn sick species.
I know folks will say “but its private property and what if those neighbors were worried it was going to fall on thier house?”
And I’d say “I guess its about control and need for “control” is ultimately the result of fear which means I guess we’re actually a scared and sick society.”

Don’t regs require replacement of some sort or can Decaturites cut with impunity?

Decatur does have a tree ordinance requiring replacement.

Dude cuts down tree = scared and sick society. Got it.

We had to take ours down because it split, it literally made me ill. I loved that tree. Our neighbors had to take down an enormous tree because there was something wrong with it. I wouldn’t jump to a conclusion that they are just wanting to write a large check to take the tree down for no reason.

      • DawgFan says:
        December 28, 2012 at 12:50 pm

“Wanted to say thanks to them for taking us all another notch down the road towards human extinction.”

This qualifies as thought? Perhaps the tree is being removed to preserve the lives of your neighbor and his/her family. I can only imagine that you are one of those people who refuses to do yard work and pretends (and tells everyone) that it is a “nature preserve”. Without knowing you and never having seen your yard, I am quiet confident your neighbor feels the same disdain about your choices for your overgrown yard.

        • There's a Parking Lot in the Square says:

          Hows this for a thought?
Continue advocating war on the natural world.
You may be able to continue to kill all sorts of trees and species.
The many types of flocks of birds that used to fly through our air, the tigers, the salmon, the frogs. Continue to cut down down trees, fill streams and rivers with carcinogens, continue to choke the oceans with plastics.
But… the natural world shall surely destroy you.
Our so civilization/society may have the power to destroy much of the natural world, but here’s the catch…
The earth will ultimately destroy every last tank and gun and airplane, every last electrical wire, every last cell phone tower, every last rain line, every last factory, every last factory trawler, every last logging truck, every last skyscraper, every last dam, every last civilized human being who opposes it.
So go ahead. Keep cutting down those trees Mr. Consumer.

          • Squirrel-headed Bastard says:
            December 28, 2012 at 2:58 pm

If the natural world is surely going to destroy us, shouldn’t we fight back?

I perused the FFAF this morning when the location was still up and wondered what exactly you were hoping to accomplish by being so specific with it. Any who, is it possible the home owner’s know something about the tree that the rest of us aren’t privy to?

        • J_T says:
          December 28, 2012 at 5:04 pm

No. WE know better! Homeowners are, by their very nature, heartless, greedy bastards (not to be confused with Squirrel-headed ones, though the distinctions often overlap). These tree-killers must be dealt with, and a good ol’ cyber-lynching is the logical first step, their spurious concerns and property rights be damned!

          • Daydreamer says:
            December 28, 2012 at 5:57 pm

What TPITS fails to understand is that unless you are living completely off the grid, and completely self-sufficiently / no vehicle/microwave/anything that was produced using coal, etc…, then you too are a problem. But of course it’s just much easier to put your neighbor’s house location on the internet to publicly shame them, and call it a day.

      • Eric says:
        December 28, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Hasn’t there been discussion on this board about how Decatur’s trees are aging? If I remember correctly (and please let me know if I do), many of the trees here are water oaks, which have a 75 – 100 year life span. And they were planted something like 75 years ago. Thus, many of them are reaching the natural end of their life.

I hate to see them cut down, too (we have lost three over the past several years), but like all living things, they have a limited life span. Planting new trees in their place is the right thing to do, and we will all be enjoying a new canopy in the years to come.

        • Sara says:
          December 29, 2012 at 9:24 pm

Exactly. And having had one fall in our yard, I can say, I wish I’d had the money to have it safely removed. I’m thankful that all that all that was harmed when ours fell was a fence. Many, many of the water oaks around town are dying, and having them safely removed is much preferable to allowing them to fall and hurt someone’s property or worse.

This qualifies for a Hometown Hero nomination. All the quiet, neighbor-to-neighbor support that goes on in this town surely accounts for at least half (if not more) of its appeal.

I understand they’re going to paint the sides in blue faux-marble swirls like the recently closed diner had. And on the front, a ginormous bulldog mascot painting for the kids across the street to look at through the school windows. At night, for home football games, mini lasers will animate the dog’s mouth barking at arriving opponents. Can’t wait.

Since the primary occupant of the building is an architect, I doubt if he would tolerate cheap construction.

The visible seams indicate that they are using concrete fiber panels in an application common in contemporary architecture. Anything but cheap

I have used SuperBass on Lawrenceville Hwy in Tucker for many car audio installs. They are very knowledgeable and reasonably priced….don’t worry about the sketchy look of the outside. However, I don’t know how much product they actually sell…I have always purchased elsewhere and just had them do the installations.

Predicting the CSD school population may get tricky:

The front page of ajc.com today reports that “The country’s birth rate dropped 8 percent between 2007 and 2010 and now stands at 1920-era levels, a Pew Research Center report has found….” “…The trend holds true in Georgia, which saw birth rates drop from 48.3 to 41.9 between 2007 and 2010, state data show. The nation’s birth rate is now 64 births per 1,000 women, according to 2010 data. The evidence is pretty good that it’s related to recession,” said D’Vera Cohn, co-author of the Pew report, noting this is the third Pew study looking at dropping birth rates since the recession began.”

On the other hand, the near collapse of the DeKalb County School System and the less than impressive Atlanta School System performance has pushed up the popularity of residency in the City of Decatur. So who knows what the net effect of a declining population of preschoolers but increased pressure to leave DeKalb and Atlanta school systems will be on the school population in Decatur? Never mind annexation.

Meanwhile, history shows that drops in the birth rate due to the economy are usually short-lived and followed by a rebound. So CSD and the School Board will have to stay actively engaged, asking questions, and ready to adjust to the ups and downs of the population cycles, if they occur. Getting a handle on the current preschool population in Decatur, not using models designed for elsewhere, will always be key.
