Greg sends in this pic of an accident outside of Dancing Goats early this afternoon.
Bradley reported in…
Car crash at Dancing Goats. Blocked lanes. Fire, police. Why they need to have a helicopter overhead I don’t know.

Street is closed down at Fairview.
It was a mess. Saw the whole thing while coming out of Taqueria del Sol. 2 Fire Trucks and EMTs on the scene plus 4 police cars. For one car. You would have thought the car took out a whole block with all of the hoopla around it.
I appreciate the responsive hoopla of our police and fire … an over-response is better than an under-staffed response, IMO.
There is always the third option of a proportionate and adequate response, no?
When there is electricity involved and a driver stuck in a crashed car on a main thoroughfare, how do they know what the appropriate level of response should be until they get there or get more information? From what I heard, as soon as the scene was secure, various units left to help out with the situation on E. PdL. Seems quite reasonable to me.
As Gwyneth said, when a call comes in emergency personnel have no idea of the true magnitude, especially if vehicle(s) are involved. They respond with all available and release units that are not needed. That is SOP and I think if you were involved you would want it that way.
Thank God for more than enough hoopla. I have lived where there is no hoopla at all.
In bonus fun news, per CSD’s Facebook page and my own personal witnessing…
“A tree limb has fallen onto a transformer over E. Ponce de Leon Avenue. E. Ponce de Leon Avenue is closed from Glendale Avenue to Glennwood Elementary. Power is out in the area, but power is on at Glennwood Elementary. All Glennwood Elementary students are safe. Routes 51 and 52 will be delayed. You may expect delays on Routes from the 4/5 Academy as well.”
Uhh… How do you have a single car accident THERE? Assuming this was not caused by some sudden-onset health issue, this person should not be driving!
Actually quite frightening, given the number of people typically sitting in front of Dancing Goats.
Or was this person distracted by the helicopter? 😉
From what I’ve read, I’m under the impression that he had some sort of seizure. I would hope that if he knew that seizure was possible, he would not have been driving. Hope that he’s well and thankful that it wasn’t worse, as it could very well have been (as you mention).
Generally, and though I cannot recall the fine print, if you’ve had a certain type of relatively severe seizure, you can’t legall drive until you have been seizure free for a certain number of months.
I was in the path of the car and saw the whole thing. Elderly gentleman was having a grand mal seizure as the car ht the pile. The seizure continued for about a minute after the crash. His doors were locked so we couldnt get in to help him. Police had us move back because his car was on top of exposed wiring. There was risk of electrocution or fire from gas. Emergency response was excellent. The man was ok:)
Very sad. And maybe not preventable. This could have been his first seizure. Or he could have been seizure-free on medications but some other unexpected medical condition triggered the seizure despite good medication control. Many, many people with well-controlled seizure disorders are driving safely and legally all around us.
Glad it turned out well.
Unless it was a medical emergency that caused it, I’m trying to understand how the car managed to slam into a pole at that angle.
also: ARE THE GOATS OK?
I’m sure they’re all back to sipping lattes, eyeing newcomers, and “blogging” uncontrollably.
What I heard at the Goat was that the driver had a seizure .. and maybe swerved that way to avoid crashing into oncoming traffic.
All cleared up! Very efficient police response.
As of about 2:30 the traffic signal at E. Ponce/Arcadia is completely out. There’s a pretty good game of multi-lane chicken going on.
I had an issue at this intersection last week! The light controlling E. Ponce would not change to green. I was first in line at the light, fortunately, so I figured it out pretty quickly, but the traffic backup was epic.
Also, as long as I’m issuing alerts: it’s about 10-15 degrees c-c-colder than usual at YDFM today.
On a kind-of related note, we had some car break-ins last night on Superior Ave, when I left the house this AM, there were 2 cop cars checking things out… I appreciate the response from our City’s finest.
2nd time this has happened in the last year or two on our street… They mostly just opened cars that were unlocked, though I think 1 guy had his window broken this time.
I see lots of people running the new stop sign at Commerce near the high school. It’s a small sign and the city may need to do something else for some emphasis. The temporary “Prepare to Stop” sign didn’t help.
Thank you! We thought the same thing . . . “Prepare to stop” is hardly the same thing as “New traffic sign.”
I’ve witnessed this myself, which freaks me out because I cross there a lot. Taking down the pedestrian crossing sign did not help matters.
That sign does seem very small. The first time I went by this week I almost didn’t notice it.
The City could make its monthly moving violation quota in a day by stationing a patrol car at that intersection.
Seriously. I was driving northbound on Commerce yesterday, behind someone who didn’t even try to pretend to stop as he turned left at that intersection. And he was speeding.
I was coming down the road in the opposite direction. Hitting the lamp post was an accident and his car swerved that’s why it’s at that angle. He was convulsing or seizing violently. If he hadn’t hit the pole he might have hit some people on the sidewalk.
Also the helicopter was Fox News. They must have a police scanner because they got there quickly.
After thought: I don’t know whether it was the crash that caused the seizure. It looked like he was trying to get into the parking lot quickly and cut it short, thus hitting the pole and his car swung around. I think he was trying to get out of the road because he was definitely not well. It is lucky he hit the pole. Having a front row view, I must say it was terrifying. Hope he is alright.
What’s happening at the MARTA tracks near Adair Street? I heard there were lots of emergency vehicles. Someone called me around 4:45 PM.
I’ve heard the police were chasing down a suspect who was trying to escape throught the MARTA tunnels that they have since caught…I’ve not been able to verify that yet…
I’m guessing there was another problem of this same sort on Commerce, right near the Taco Mac. Another light pole broken and down right there. I guess it happened in the middle of the night, since it didn’t make the discussion.
