West College Commercial Renovation To House a “Healthy Pet Supplies Store”

I’ve heard from a lot of folks wondering about this commercial renovation at the corner of Mead and West College.

Gary sends in this pic of a sign now in the window announcing the coming of “Corrina’s Corner”.  The shop’s website describes the new spot thusly…

An alternative, healthy pet supplies store serving Decatur and surrounding neighborhoods. Check out our homemade, fresh pet food (Raw and Cooked) in our Deli or many artisan, handmade pet goods from across the country in our Artisan Marketplace…as well as all sorts of other things you’d need for your furry family members!

  1. Glad to see that this area of Decatur is getting the attention of business entrepreneurs. My son and I drove down west College looking for Rev Donuts and saw the renovation. I wish the business owner much success.

  2. bless all y’all pet owners with chi chi pets who require gluten free, pre-masticated vegan riblets warmed to 122º, and served with an amuse bouche of garden herb stuffed mushroom caps drizzled with truffle oil, but i’ve got to tell you something your friends won’t: y’all’s crazy.

    i still love ya though
happy to have the new store in the hood
    good luck store owners!
(hope you keep a cupla spare straightjackets behind the counter.)

    1. I agree. We’ve stopped buying ANY food for our dogs. We just let them out in the yard and they can eat whatever squirrels they catch. So far only Stanley has figured it out. I’m sure the girls will catch on soon enough. Besides, they needed to lose some weight anyway.

  3. now that fills a practical walkable need. a dog bakery and gourmet dog food place within 1/2 mile of each other. jeebus.

    1. Agreed the market is clamoring for more gourmet pet food shops? – not one truly to squelch entrepreneurship but seriously there is a need? Thanks to the folks who are renovating this – how about a wish list of what folks would like to see in the other 3-4 spots? I am going with Thai restaurant, breakfast/diner, deli sandwich shop, hardware, nail salon…

      1. video store, book/comic book store, record shop, small drug store, small hardware, small coop grocery, community music/art/meeting space. not saying any of these are happening, or that there’s necessarily enough space for some of these, just throwing out a wish list.

      2. If you need to ask if there is a need, then you are obviously not in the target market. If you have a pet you are probably still vaccinating your dog every year, and feeding your dog kibble from Petsmart that gets recalled twice per year. If someone is trying to open a business and you aren’t interested, why comment at all? What about Thai Garlic, Ace Hardware, Thumbs Up Diner ?

        1. Last I checked this was an open forum/blog to comment, your right(not there target market) I don’t understand why you would have 2 niche businesses 1/2 mile apart from each other, doesn’t make sense (business or otherwise) to me and I am sure many others….hopefully I am proven wrong so I wish them all the business and fortune in the world….

          1. Not to mention…there are 2 Mexican restaurants IN SIGHT of each other in Oakhurst Village. I think many would question how that can work.

Plus it seems like this place and Taj-Ma-Hound are going to be doing separate things really. A dog bakery and small boutique is very different than a full scale pet supplies store…bakery=no cat stuff, no food, no self-serve bath…it would be like saying there shouldn’t be a bakery near a grocery store because they both sell baked things…or there shouldn’t be an Italian restaurant next to UJ because they both sell food.

People shouldn’t jump to conclusions when they don’t really even know what the business is going to be like yet. Wish em the best!

            1. not even close in your comparisons, your comparing Mexican restaurants to gourmet pet food stores? whats next comparing pizza places vs. bikram yoga studios , No one is jumping to conclusions stating an opinion based on the specialty of the business and its proximity to something very similar oh and wishing them the best…we will agree to disagree, this is nonsense to discuss…

              1. I think the point is that a dog treat bakery and a dog food store are analogous to a cupcake shop and a food market, a la Sugar Moon Bakery and the Oakhurst Market. Nobody questions close proximity of niche businesses catering to treats and food for humans so why for dogs?

  4. I would like to see an independent clothing store in Decatur.

In the sprit of Rick J, I am NOT talking another boutique — or some other place where I can get a custom designed silk shirt, spun from free-range silkworms and sewn with thread from organically raised hemp.

But rather, a local place where I can walk in and pay a fair price for a functional pair of jeans, a new pair of shorts, or maybe a quirky T-shirt. Clothing for the rest of us, usable most of the time. Without having to visit a chain store. 99% of people walking around Decatur are not wearing the kinds of clothes sold in our local boutique shops.

This is not the most ideal comparison (but use your imagination, and I’m sure some are going to spin this all wrong), but sort of a Decatur version of Walter’s Clothing.

  5. Speaking of this – I noticed that the old graffiti-covered warehouse building near the corner of Howard/College (just west of Rocky Ford, south of the tracks) has been cleaned up and renovated, something is going in there. Anyone have the scoop?
