Note to self: avoid Fernbank next week. Meep Meep.
good one, #22
I’m still waiting to see one!
During Winter break, I was walking rural Southern woods with my daughter and dog. We found a coyote skeleton. The skull was intact and free of flesh. I went to the local hardware store to get some peroxide to clean it proper, but they didn’t have any. I asked the man there a question that would probably get me arrested here, even at the friendly Ace: “Is there anything else you can recommend for cleaning a skull?”
The guy didn’t skip a beat. “Nope,” he says, “That’s just about the best thing right there.”
So anyway, coyotes die sometimes.
You can get peroxide at CVS, in the hair care aisle.
AWARE (Atlanta Wild Animal Rescue Effort) has good information on its website about coexisting with coyotes. These dedicated folks do exceptional work with very few resources. Here’s the URL: http://www.awareone.org.
Towels Needed:
An AWARE volunteer named Amanda just posted this on a Decatur neighborhood listserv: “We are in desperate need of medium to large sized towels to use for animal rehabilitation. The towels must be free of strings, fringe or holes. Additionally, we would love to get a small mini-fridge to be used in one of our animal care rooms.”
I have some towels to donate. Where do I need to take them?
I found this:
AWARE is a non-profit organization of volunteers working to preserve and restore wildlife through education and wildlife rehabilitation.
AWARE accepts injured and orphaned wildlife every day of the year. The center is located approximately 30 minutes from Atlanta at 4158 Klondike Road, Lithonia, GA 30038.
Phone: (678) 418-1111
AWARE is on Arabia Mountain in Lithonia — beautiful area. (Teach listed all the details.) Maybe a local business or organization might agree to be a drop-off point for towels, and someone could deliver a bunch all at once. That would be terrific.
I don’t WANT to coexist with them! I want them DEAD, like my doggie.
sorry for your loss, but do you want everyone to stop driving cars because dogs get hit? the coyotes are doing what coyotes do, what all wild carnivores do, eek out a living the best they can.
The trouble is that coyotes are not native to Georgia, and have only been able to populate the area because they do so well adapting to human-created environments (such as the free pet food left outside, or even free tasty pet-snacks). In a way they are an exotic species, like the dreaded kudzu, which do not have a place in the local ecology.
Coyotes and kudzu–both ecologic interlopers. Any solutions there? Can we entice coyotes to eat kudzu? Or get the kudzu to grow over the coyotes?
Bzzzzzzt. Bad analogy.
Cars don’t attack dogs.
But coyotes prey on and attack smaller animals, including dogs.
