Happy New Year!
Let’s hope 2011 is the year someone does something about all the problems.
Oh bah humbug … I was taught that solutions start at “home” – waiting for “someone” is just useless waiting. Here’s to your “problems” not becoming anyone else’s.
When is the village coming to my “home” to start solving my problems?

Andisheh’s “problem comment” is part of his one-man running joke. If I had to summarize I’d say it’s a dig at all gripers who rant with no real knowledge of a situation.
Ah – thanks DM. Then we agree.
Yeah, that joke has run do far it needs new shoes!
LOL! Too right, but I still find myself chuckling at it.
Me too!
You were taught wrong. “Charity” starts at “home”. “Solutions” start in “chemistry”. I am unsure where “quotation marks” start. Anyone?
Place for those who ‘want to shoot guns’

I saw this last week and it’s good news. But I have only one gripe…it’s an hourly rate. At American Classic Marksman, the cost is the same but you’re not limited to the hour.
And in response to those rolling their eyes and saying, “stereotypical Republican; a gun owner,” I went last week with my liberal Democrat friend and he had a great time.
What is the verdict on the Square Pub? It seems like a good spot to do some drinkin’, but my experience with the food was … meh.
meh, squared.
fun place to hang out, nice beer selection, comfort food.
Meh, cubed. Setting was cool, but I wasn’t a fan of their food.
Agree with the mega-meh. And when I asked the waitress if they had any wheat beers (the type on the menu was too small to read in the dim light, so I just asked), she said, “I’m not sure… do you like Sweetwater 420?”
Same here. With Leon’s, Brick Store and Max McGee’s on the square, I can see no reason to frequent SP.
Hum, guess I’m in the minority here – I liked the food, but the atmosphere not so much …
We have been to Square Pub twice and really enjoyed it each time. Tried to go back for lunch on a Monday and was disappointed they are closed for Monday lunch.
DM- Will you please give us the “DM’s Laptops for Grads” info again?
Found it! :0)
http://www.decaturmetro.com/2010/11/29/help-give-decatur-high-grads-the-tools-to-success/
Thanks for asking and posting the link Deanne. There hasn’t been a ton of response thus far and I’d love to help the DEF purchase at least a second laptop to help out the DHS grads. Anything you can give would be a huge help! Let me know if you need any other info or clarifications.
Oh My!!! This won’t do!!! Pop those wallets, folks!!!
We need to MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!
Thanks for the reminder to donate. Just made a small but real donation. Thanks for organizing this and hope that lots of Decatur Metro readers will be able to donate something, even small amounts will help.
Suggestion: Why not post a reminder monthly? I’ll bet many are feeling a little strapped right now with holiday gift giving bills, college tuition, and other bills coming due. But it might be less painful to donate in January, February, or March.
And any post about CSD, any School Board meeting, any City Council meeting, and/or CSD Senior Leadership statement ought to be accompanied by a statement about whether or not the blogger/speaker has donated to the DM DHS Laptop Campaign or not. (Just kidding but I never underestimate the power of guilt and the desire to get credit).
One last rant for the year-can the plumber trucks from Cary and Daughters please stop using my road as a racetrack? The life you save may be mine.
Have fun with this…y’all!

Favorite local plumber??
I realize this is a little late, but I’d call Affordalbe Advantage Home Repair. It’s a father and son business. We’ve used them several times and they do great work. http://aahomerepair.com/
If I have a bunch of books I’d like to donate to the library for their fundraising book sale, can I just drop them off at the library at any time or is there a “call for books” before each sale? They are closed today but I’d like to do it as soon as possible so I can become reacquainted with the trunk of my car. Thanks!
Anytime. Just bring them to the front desk. They’re always happy to take as many as you have!
Got take out from Garlic on Ponce this week and it was really really good! Had the pad thai and spring rolls. FYI to anyone in search of good Thai food!
We’re on Hamburg time here, so Frohes Neues, y’all!
I wanted to comment on how much I have enjoyed the DM blog. We recently returned to Decatur after 12 years away and I feel the news and commentary is a great window into the community.
Thanks WW! Glad to have been of service. Decatur’s a bit different than it was 12 years ago, isn’t it?
I’d love to hear how it seems different or similar to you.
I lived here in the late 80s- to the 90s. Waited tables at Mick’s to pay for a dumpy rental throughout college.Downtown and the square was desolate, nothing like today. We drank at Trackside tavern (then Eddie’s) after work. I remember how spooky it was walking across town at 2am. We got held up one night at Micks while we were cleaning up for the night. But it wasn’t too bad. My biggest fears were making rent and my GPA.
Met my wife 17 years ago at a band thing at Agnes Scott. We got hitched, went to med school, took off for Manhatten. Now we are back with 3 boys in tow. I am glad Decatur got all grown up at about the same pace that I did!
Thinking about buying an iPad.
Pros and cons?
You can buy me one first and I will tell you what I think.
Don’t shoot it.
You and Nellie crack me up. The happiest of new years to you both.
Happy New Year to you too! Happy New Year to all! A good year will benefit all of us, Republican and otherwise. I don’t believe in the trickle down effect but I believe in the multidirection diffusion of prosperity.
“I don’t believe in the trickle down effect but I believe in the multidirection diffusion of prosperity.”
That sounds kind of porn-y, karass…..
Or at least corn-y. Sorry.
Hehehehehehehhe. You said corn!
illusion of prosperity! 😉
Even some convincing illusions would be nice right now…
Wait till the next version of the iPad. It’ll have a camera. No cons with the iPad as far as I can see. I’m using mine now and it’s awesome. Great for books, magazines, streaming movies, and games.
Any idea when ver 2 will be released?
Expect the announcement at CES in about two weeks. Available in April would be my bet.
I hope it’s soon cause I bought Apple at $28 per share!
love mine.
excellent as a content consumption device; less so as a content creation device.
reco waiting for the next version due out w/in a couple of months.
will have many hardware improvements, including a camera
I echo that 100%. I love it, especially as consumption device more than production. But at this point, I’d probably see what they say about next generation before jumping in.
Thanks, everyone. I will wait for the next version (although I’m REALLY itching to get one now!).
I’m of the opinion that you don’t HAVE to wait for the next version. Everyone seemed jazzed for the camera, but I wasn’t sure what I’d use it for. Skype? Um…no. Scanning barcodes? No.
I’d take mcmillend’s advice. See what’s announced about the next generation in the next week or so, and then make your decision.
yeah, I agree, camera isn’t what I really miss on it. If they allow USB capabilities (which rumors are mixed about), that would be worth it.
I need an exterior door replaced (french doors to the patio). Any recommendations for who to talk to/how to get started. Relatively new to home ownership and I’m not sure which “trade” to deal with or how to go about selecting a new door.
there is a place on college ave called “meade’s discount doors” that you could check out…
Buying the right sized door is the least of your headaches. You need to find a carpenter or handyman who can hang a door. I’ve done it, and it’s not an easy thing. Some folks swear it’s easier to rip the whole thing out and replace the door in the frame, but I cannot see that as “easier.” Ask your neighbors for recommendations.
Personally, I never go wrong when I take the advice/recommendations of the folks over at Ace Hardware on Scott. They know their stuff.
I bet the decatur diner folks were waiting for the new year to open finally for tax reasons. I’m not complaining tho I’m still gonna go! and I love the exterior so I know I’m in the minority lol
