Decatur Resident Murdered by “Irate Customer” at Tucker Auto Shop

    Decatur Metro | October 13, 2009 | 9:44 am

The AJC reports on the murder of European Auto Care Center owner and City of Decatur resident, George Tyrones, who was shot at his Tucker shop by “irate customer” Troy Johnson on Monday October 5th.

According to the AJC’s report, Johnson was upset because he had to pay for work done on his Jaguar in cash, because he had a history of bouncing checks.

Of living in Decatur, the AJC writes…

Besides his Mercedes, Tyrones favorite wheels were his daughters’ bicycles. Neighbors frequently saw him walking down Decatur’s streets, helping his 5-year-old Ave and 3-year-old Ariana learn to ride.

He also liked to take the girls fishing or watch them play on their Slip n’ Slide in the yard, his wife said.

The defendant’s attorney has subsequently warned people not to “rush to judgment” in this case, but hasn’t elaborated.

Tyrones’ funeral will be Friday at 10am at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Clairmont Road.

My deepest condolences to the Tyrones family. Thanks to Nathan for bringing the AJC articles to my attention.

This is terrible. George and his wife, Andrea, are good people. My heart goes out to her and the girls.

I met George for the first time a few weeks ago at Oakhurst elementary. He was a very nice man, who clearly loved his family. I’m saddened and shocked by his passing.

Oh, that’s horrible. We got a note in our son’s folder last week saying that the parent of kindergartener had been killed, and they also included a page about how to talk to your children about death and an offer to the school’s guidance staff if you thought it would be helpful.

The murder actually occurred on Monday, 10/5. There was also a good article in the Champion.

It’s hard to comprehend this terrible tragedy as an adult…even harder to talk to my daughter about the loss as she is friends and classmates with the oldest Tyrones daughter. It’s a loss for the whole community. And my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and the Decatur community.

Decaturmom writes in and points out this fundraiser for George at Holy Trinity…

      GEORGE TYRONES GARDEN GATEWAY
As many of you know George Tyrones, the parent of Ariana in Holly and Mary Lynn’s Monday-Wednesday-Friday class was shot and killed at his car repair shop on Monday, October 5. As a memory for this man who has been so vitally involved with Holy Trinity we are dedicating our garden arbor in his name. Contributions for the George Tyrones Garden Gateway can be made out to HTPP and mailed to the church, 515 E. Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur Georgia 30030; Attention: Kay Watkins. Frank Burdette, Flora Jane’s father, will build the arbor for us. Any remaining funds will be applied to scholarship funds also in George’s name.

Thanks to all of parents for your love and prayers during the difficult time.
