New Owner Talks About "The Grange Public House"

    Decatur Metro | August 6, 2008 | 9:38 am

Darren, one of the owner’s of “The Grange Public House”, was good enough to shoot me an email yesterday and give out a few more firsthand details about our city’s latest pub.

“…The owners are my siblings, and myself, all hailing from Ireland and aiming to bring a bit of Dublin to Decatur. At The Grange, what you won’t find is the American version of an “Irish Pub,” you’ll find a “Dublin Pub,” with the feeling and experience you’d get walking into a pub in the heart of contemporary Dublin, today. [ I subsequently asked Darren about the differences between the two and he told me that the best contemporary comparison (without going to Dublin) would probably be Tom Cruise’s “Far and Away” vs. the recent Oscar-winner “Once”. – The Grange will be much more like the later]

The name “The Grange” is really the intersection of our lives in Ireland and our lives here in Atlanta. Back in medieval Ireland, The Grange, located in the town monastery, was where food and beer was produced and stored. It was also a popular gathering place for the community. That’s what we want The Grange Public House to be for Decatur. We all grew up beside a well known Grange in the foothills of the Dublin mountains.

The Grange will be owner operated and serve pub-style food along with an international beer & wine list, all at a reasonable price. [he also stated later that the menu will start out with a few staples and evolve over time] It’ll be a place where friends & family can go for a nice drink and meal as well as good conversation.

We’ve been busy with minor renovations: brightening up the interior and refreshing the exterior, grafting toward an early September opening. We’ll keep you posted.”

Best of all, Darren’s gonna let me come take a look around and snap a few photos some time next week! So look forward to that!

Pretty much everywhere is kid friendly if your kids stay at their tables, don’t through food on the floor and you don’t get drunk and ignore them while they ruin everyone elses dining experience. An all too frequent experience in Decatur.

In Ireland if you don’t discipline your kids somebody else will.

Why does seemingly EVERY event and restaurant etc. etc. have to be kid friendly? That are plenty of folks who are empty nesters, or have no kids, as well as adults who can go out without the kids for an evening, but we all have to be subjected to high chairs, running children, etc. etc.

Even Jazz nite in Oakhurst has become overrun with kids running in front of performers, messing with the lights….

What ever happened to adults only evenings/events/dining…?

I’m sure they are out there, just maybe not as many in Decatur. Midtown has a lot. I think its just a product of the environment of Decatur. If an establishment does not cater to families they omit a large paying population.

plus, I would guess, most families with kids are not out after 9 or so for the most part anyway, thus leaving the establishments open to adults after that.

      for the most part…

The children aren’t the problem, its the adults who fail to supervise and discipline them that are. I have no issue at all with well behaved children, and applaud parents that swiftly remove acting up children from an establishment and take them home. Places have to cater to everyone.

Seems to me that the beasty-kids-in-restaurants issue could be better managed with kid and non-kid sections. I’ll take the latter, please!

agreed….but this old mare is in the barn pretty early , so dinners after 9 are too close to breakfast…LOL

And did that post get off topic in a HURRY! 🙂

I have to agree that the problem is never with the kid that acts up and goes crazy. It’s with the parent that is so sensitive that they won’t discipline a kid in public because they are A) Self absorbed and selfish and don’t care about others experience or B) Want to be the kids “friend” and not hurt their precious “feelings”. puuuuuhllleeaase.

Ah yes…there are about a half-dozen things that will get Decatur residents off-topic in the blink of an eye. “Children at restaurants” is definitely one of them. If you want to relive it again…go reread the El Tesoro postings.

A swing by Twist n Scoot and Fleet Feet, a beer and good grub at Grange Public House, a new shirt at Whit’s End, and a coffee at Dancing Goats. West Ponce is “Movin on up”! Maybe a nightcap at Taqueria or Watershed too!

Cheers to The Grange! Looking forward to enjoying Dublin Pub experience and then crossing the street to test drive some scooters!

It’s great the see the instant rebound that Fleet Feet, Twist-n-Scoot & The Grange are going to offer West Ponce (WePo.) An awesome mix to the area!

So glad to have a true Dublin pub coming to town. They had damn well better have a good cider on tap. Every pub we hit in Ireland had draft cider, and it wasn’t treated like a second-class citizen like it is here. In some pubs, as many people were drinking that as Guinness.

      E…from everything I hear, absolutely.

Tybee is right. Let’s hear it for great draught cider. Please don’t forget about us cider drinkers at the Grange.

You cider lovers have read our minds! We have put in place a wee lobby to bring Irish cider (on draft) to The Grange. Picture yourselves knocking back a few scoops (i.e. pints) of refreshing cider (often ordered with ice) on the patio in this weather – magic! Your interest and comments will indeed help move the process along.

I’ll drink to that. we’ll have to see who can soak the most scoops. sign me up.
