It seems that the AJC just can’t get enough of the historic preservation battles lately. Yesterday’s paper features an article covering proposed districts not only in Oakhurst, but also in VA-Highlands and Midtown.

These articles tend to boil down the issue to pro-preservation folks wanting to prevent unsympathetic McMansions in their neighborhoods, while those opposed to preservation efforts arguing its undemocratic to restrict additional property rights.

It usually takes a real threat on an entire neighborhood (like the 80′ condos in Old Decatur) or a demolished local landmark to get near-universal support of a historic district. But since Scottish Rite is already protected, that isn’t the case in Oakhurst.
