Preservation Irritation
Decatur Metro | October 7, 2007It seems that the AJC just can’t get enough of the historic preservation battles lately. Yesterday’s paper features an article covering proposed districts not only in Oakhurst, but also in VA-Highlands and Midtown.
These articles tend to boil down the issue to pro-preservation folks wanting to prevent unsympathetic McMansions in their neighborhoods, while those opposed to preservation efforts arguing its undemocratic to restrict additional property rights.
It usually takes a real threat on an entire neighborhood (like the 80′ condos in Old Decatur) or a demolished local landmark to get near-universal support of a historic district. But since Scottish Rite is already protected, that isn’t the case in Oakhurst.
