I am writing to ask for the Decatur community to help support the Decatur-DeKalb YMCA Soccer Club’s 98 Wolves Elite U16 Boys team, who have been selected to compete in the 2013 Disney Showcase tournament in Orlando, Florida. Known as the “Proving Ground,” the Disney Soccer Showcase is the ultimate place for top clubs to be seen by hundreds of college coaches looking for great soccer talent. Rated as the No. 1 youth soccer tournament in the United States in a Soccer America survey, Disney Soccer Showcase gives athletes a chance to shine on one of the biggest stages set for youth soccer in this country.
The 98 Wolves Elite team will be the first DDYSC team in our 40-plus year history to compete in this event. This team is a diverse group of players from all over the world. The 98 Wolves Elite team is comprised of nine state Olympic Development Program (ODP) players, two Region III ODP players, and one Under 17 U.S. National Team player. The entire U16 Boys age group is special because these players and their families were the founders of DDYSC’s “Soccer Village.” “Soccer Village” is the term used to describe the extensive support network for our refugee players, who often come from families of limited means. This network extends well beyond the soccer field and has made an enormous impact on the lives of these boys. Some of these boys started with DDYSC as 8 year olds and through dedication and hard work, they have progressed into one of the best teams in Georgia. They now have a chance to prove themselves against other elite teams from across the country. We would deeply appreciate any donations from the Decatur community to help offset the expense of a trip to Orlando around Christmas time and send these players to Orlando to represent our entire “Soccer Village.
Donations can be made at the link below via PayPal or you can bring a donation to Kathy Meyer-Frisbey, the YMCA’s community sports director, at the Decatur YMCA. Thank you for any support you can offer.
