These CSD-led camps tend to be awesome. I highly recommend them. Unfortunately, a lot of them cluster in the same time periods. There’s more of them in June than July and more of them are half-day in the morning than full day or half-day in the afternoon which makes it hard for working families that have to put two halves together for a full day of care for their children.

      Thanks Karass!
We have to work around the cleaning schedule and for the system and leave time for teachers to set up their rooms, therefore we clustered all the teacher-led camps in June at Clairemont. Four weeks of awesome camps!

I forgot to list Dana Kinney’s Camp Wanna-Cook-a-Lot for 5-8 year olds June 14-18, 9:00-12:00.

Understand. But if some of these great camps don’t get enough enrollment it may not be that folks don’t appreciate them but that the camps are competing with one another for the same time slots. And some families may have to skip a camp that they’d love but doesn’t come with a counterpart for the afternoon for the same age group at Clairemont.

I’m not even mentioning a couple of the camps to one of my children who would be heartbroken to know that they are missing them. But they conflict timewise with another priority choice. Meanwhile, there were other weeks in the summer where we would have loved more good choices.

Of course, if Mary Poppins would have shown up at LSOS like she promised, we probably would have worked all this out with a spoonful of sugar and she would have transported the children by umbrella whereever they needed to be this summer. Maybe next summer if the children write a good ad for a nanny….

Agree that there was a lack of 1-4 camps this summer, which would have nicely complemented the many wonderful 9-12 camps. I know it’s hard to cover all the bases and I’m sure they work diligently at providing a variety of camps for a variety of ages, but being able to combine these half-day camps is great when it works out!

One of my sons did Totally Awesome Tech for beginners last year and absolutely loved it. He can’t wait to go back for the advanced session this year.

Anyone else out there wishing for more camps for middle schoolers? I’d love some half-day camps my kid could walk to – get her out of the house and away from the screens for a while.

Yes! But CSD tried camps for middle schoolers a few years ago and not enough kids signed up. Doesn’t Decatur Rec have some 1/2 day camps for young teens? Check the Playbook.

Here is another place that has half day camps for middle schoolers. Don’t know where you live in Decatur but it is a couple of blocks south of
