Decatur Hearts Obama

October 11, 2008 | 11:27 am

As I was flipping through the current issue of Atlanta Magazine while waiting to cut my hairs cut yesterday, I noticed a series of bar charts that showed the breakdown of Obama/McCain contributions by Atlanta metro zip code.

Bet you can’t guess which zip loves Obama the mostest?

Yep! According to the chart, of the roughly $100,000 sent to one of the two presidential candidates from 30030, 95% went to Obama.  Staggering!  No other metro area came close to being so one-sided.  (Sorry, I can’t recall or find the source…maybe someone could provide it)

Doesn’t look like area Dems should lose much sleep over the increase in McCain yard signs after all.  We still seem to be Georgia’s liberal mecca.

Just in case you 30030’s need a little more Obama– some of our carvers in La Union in southern Mexico, also big Obama supporters, have made a few Democratic Donkeys reading “Obama 2008″ books. And one purple kangaroo, too… They are pretty excited about this race down there! And since these are our reading figures, 20% of the sales go to support the library we helped to open in this village.

Hi! I’m Amanda, and I edit that section of Atlanta. The source is fundrace.org. You can type in any ZIP, address, or even just a name, if you’re curious, to see who is donating what. Thanks for the mention–we love Decatur Metro!

Thanks Amanda! I think I came across fundrace.org but couldn’t figure out how to pull up just Obama/McCain totals.

    Love Atlanta magazine!

For further, yet decidedly unscientific results, my son will be polling our Decatur neighborhood on Halloween in a Candy Voting Machine costume. Neighbors will vote with their candy for either Obama or McCain. For more information or for the Ponce de Leon Heights results check out:

I’m wondering if I’m the only one who’s had a yard sign stolen? I put up my Obama sign tonight, and it was gone within an hour. I live in the Medlock Park neighborhood, and see only McCain signs here. What’s going on?

  9. KC says:

Kerry, I’ve had a few friends–all over Atlanta and Decatur–who have had their Obama signs stolen. One of my friends had THREE SIGNS stolen within three weeks, each shortly after she replaced them. They contacted the police, but there’s not much that can be done about it. I think the police told them that this has been happening quite a bit. Another friend lives in Morningside, and she’s had her signs stolen too! It’s infuriating, to say the least… =(

The sign thefts don’t appear to be isolated. My wife and I live in Oakhurst. We have had three Obama signs stolen so far, and have had another one cut. Last week we had 2 stolen within 48 hours. I just keep replacing them. Each stolen sign means more money for Obama. The only problem is that I keep running out of signs…

I’m writing from downtown Boston, one of the most beautiful cities in the US and the world. I was telling some colleagues up here about this yard sign situation and they found it unusual. This is not something that would happen up here. They asked me to express thier solidarity with the Obama supporters in Georgia. People recognize that many Decatur residents are pioneers in a State that is still, in many respects, hostile and backwards to a progressive worldview.

I am writing from my office in the Virginia-Highlands, one of the most beautiful towns in Atlanta and Georgia.

I was thinking about a video I just saw linked from a very popular website about the tolerance and diversity of the progressive worldview:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQalRPQ8stI

Am I the only Kennedy Democrat left in the United States? Seriously, am I?

Yeah Rick, I stem from CT and I used to steal people’s signs all the time.

J/K, but I hate to break it to you that people’s signs were often stolen in the elite, liberal mecca that is New England.

If any one wants to trap-door their signs let me know. I usually place my signs where there is an overhanging tree branch. I attach fishing line to the bottom of the sign, and run it through eye-screws up the tree, attached to a bucket of urine. As soon as the sign is moved, the bucket of urine dumps whoever is touching the sign. The only problems are 1) it takes a long time to refill the bucket of urine, and 2) the sign is affected in the same way as the perpetrator. But on the other hand, I’ve found this is effective and I’ve been the only one to replace my signs, despite repeated attempts of others to do so.

  16. Right Wing says:

What exactly is a “Kennedy Democrat,” there, Left Wing?

Is it someone who believes that “man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life?”

Is it someone who belives that if a “free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich?”

Is it someone who believes that the United Nations is “our last best hope in an age where the instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace?”

Maybe a “Kennedy Democrat” is someone who would as President of the United States would reach out to its adversaries and pledge that “both sides begin anew the quest for peace, before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction” or someone who would say “[l]et us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.”

Those are exacty quotes from John F. Kennedy’s Inargural Speech in 1961.

Several of my neighbors have had trouble getting an Obama sign, i.e., they were told they were not available locally. So maybe people are stealing signs to put in their own yards – just a thought…

    I am so flattered.

  20. Left Wing says:

Oh….and a Kennedy Democrat thinks that garbage like this is reprehensible!:

  21. KC says:
    October 14, 2008 at 8:13 am

Melissa, that thought has crossed my mind as well, but I think it’s highly unlikely. What kind of supporter would do such a thing? And why would someone repeatedly steal signs from the same neighbor? And why would it happen everywhere?

The Obama Decatur Campaign office had been out of yard signs for awhile, but I believe their supply has now been replenished.

  22. Right Wing says:

All voters should think stuff like this is reprehensible:

And these fools at a McCain rally just yesterday morning:

    http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/10/still-a-terrori.html

And if you really want to know what a “Kennedy Democrat” believes then why don’t you ask one?

As I read these entries about the sign stealing intown I had a different idea than most of ya’ll. It seems that these signs do actually cost money so maybe Obama fans are stealing them from other Obama fans so they don’t have to buy a sign. I ordered an Obama sign for my yard the other day and it reminded me that these could be dems just looking for a free sign rather than the republicans stealing for revenge. This scenario seems actually quite likely. These signs are commodities left out in a yard. They’ll get stolen if they cost money.

  24. Kerry Wendt says:
    October 15, 2008 at 7:33 pm

I personally don’t buy the dems stealing dems’ signs line. I’ve since found quite a bit on ye olde internet about sign-stealing, and it seems to be almost exclusively something one does to the opposite party.

It also seems people have come up with clever ways of preventing it, or at least making it *unpleasant* for the person who swipes it.

In any case, I spotted some Obama signs in the neighb. today.
