Soda Pop and Candy Shop “Rocket Fizz” Coming to Decatur
Decatur Metro | May 16, 2016 | 11:17 amDecatur officials have confirmed that the Decatur Downtown Development Authority has subleased its space at 115 Clairemont Ave – the spot next to the Decatur Visitors Center – to “Rocket Fizz” a franchise soda pop and candy shop with locations nationwide.
According to Rocket Fizz’s website the store offers “thousands of bottled soda pops and candies from all over America” and “hundreds of retro and gag gifts, and concert posters and posters and tin signs too.” Also, there’s a short history of the company…
The Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shops, LLC was founded in 2007 by Robert (Rob) Powells and Ryan Morgan and in 2012 Rich Shane became the company CEO. The original “flagship” store located in Camarillo, California opened in 2009. The Camarillo and Sherman Oaks, California locations are company-owned. In under five years the Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shops has become the largest and fastest growing soda pop and candy shop franchise brand in America.
The Decatur location will be Rocket Fizz’s third in Georgia, with locations already in both Marietta and Savannah.
Asst. City Manager Lyn Menne projects an opening date of late summer/early fall opening.

Sweet!
Interesting. It seems like Rocket Fizz might be in competition with Greene’s although it’s about nostalgic penny candy (which was often junky if sweet) rather than fresh, handcrafted candies and fudge. And it will cover some of the niche vacated by Heliotrope by offering kitsch and joke gifts. I would wonder if it’s going to make it. The baby boomers and Gen Xers who remember the cheap sweets have long moved on to health food and farm to table. Younger folks won’t be familiar. But the stores have succeeded elsewhere so maybe it’s about running a good business vs. just the product.
Is this sort of thing appropriate for Decatur? Is it organic enough? Are the wrappers biodegradable enough for our standards? Is it healthy sugar or that toxic, artificial corn stuff? Are they going to give out those plastic bags? I don’t like those plastic bags!

Lots and lots of kids walking to and from school will pass by every day. Fridays alone should serve to keep them in business if they are friendly and their prices competitive.
