I love this idea. But can’t help wondering about the paddles and ping pong balls. Concrete paddles might not get stolen but have obvious limitations. Proper paddles and balls would probably disappear quickly. Storage at the tennis center is an option but it’s a bit far plus not always open. You’d have to require a deposit or license to ensure that the paddles and balls were returned. So I imagine that it’s bring your own paddles and balls just like racquets and balls for tennis or charcoal for the grills. One more set of things to keep in the trunk of the family vehicle…

Ya, it really stinks when the concrete ping pong ball drops on your toe.
How much did this cost? And why is it necessary?
Why is anything necessary for that matter? Let’s get rid of all frivolous things paid for with public money! Libraries? Who needs them! Dog Parks? No way! Playgrounds? Get your own! Senior Centers? What a waste! Schools? Privatize ’em and charge tuition! More negative stuff, blah, blah, blah!

Because kids with things to do are less inclined to become kids with nothing to do?
And you think a stone ping pong table is the answer? What about the two open fields, basketball court, playground, and walking/running trail at Glenlake Park? Are those not good enough?
All the things you mention are part of the answer. Why is the ping pong table the only one that bothers you?

I’m more upset with the dog park up above the new ping pong table. Those dogs didn’t pay any taxes, why do they get a park?

On a population level, I think this saves us all money. One concrete ping pong table means that we don’t need all those cheap ping pong tables that start out in our family rooms and basements and then get wrecked and end up serving as just a flat surface to put toys and junk on. Just send the kids to the park with paddles and balls and save space and money.

Interesting to see the responses Bulldog received to merely asking how much the table cost. I too was curious, and did a quick search. Two manufacturer websites popped up, and neither lists prices. I suppose it’s like the Rolls Royce dealer — if you have to ask, you can’t afford it. Speaking of which, why doesn’t Decatur have a Rolls Royce?
