Sprint Store Taking Over Old Twist n’ Scoot Location on West Ponce
Decatur Metro | July 23, 2015 | 7:43 amLooks like the rumors were true.
Sprint has put up a sign over the former Twist n’ Scoot space on West Ponce de Leon Avenue next to Dancing Goats.
Does Decatur now have representation from all the major cell phone companies?
The nearest T-mobile I know of is near the Kroger on DeKalb Industrial.
I don’t think I’ve ever shopped around for a cell carrier by going into a store. I think we bought a phone at a Verizon store maybe 12 years ago when we added a line, and once tried unsuccessfully to deal with a phone issue at whatever Bellsouth wireless was called way back when. I never see anyone actually in the Decatur mobile stores when I glance in the windows. How do they make enough to pay Decatur store rents?
Interesting. We have almost always bought new phones at a Verizon store. Not sure why we do this now. Seems it used to be easier to transfer contacts and stuff over in the store than it was at home. Probably not true anymore. Next time we will probably order online. Never really paid attention to the carrier stores in Decatur, but the Verizon locations we’ve used (Buckhead, Tucker) are usually very busy.
We recently found buying a family set of phones and Verizon plan extremely convenient at the Decatur Verizon on West Ponce. It was quite painless given the enormity of what we were doing.
How much will their fried chicken cost?
Wonder if they’ll get a break on rent for a year or two and then fold when rents go up? Always wondered how Feather Baby has stayed there for so long…if a scooter shop in Decatur can’t make it, I’m not sure how successful a Sprint store will be. Really poor use of that space, IMHO, but they’re paying!!
I have seen this happen in other towns when rents get too high and price out local retailers. You get corporate entities like this, who see these rents as cheaper than what they are paying in other big cities and can show good coverage to their shareholders, and real estate offices plastering their listings on the windows. See places like Aspen, CO for reference. Yes, they provide a service– to customers who need that service one maybe every few years, but it doesn’t engender a lively downtown scene. Maybe they’ll prove me wrong and serve wine at the next Artwalk, but I’m not holding my breath. IMHO, it reduces the “interestingness” of the town.
I agree that it’s not particularly useful to most people. That said, downtown Decatur is a central location for many people who do often have to conduct this kind of business in person. You make a good point about the relatively cheap rent for corporate chains (on the other hand, local restaurants, for example, have to charge a lot in areas that are relatively expensive for them–even for meatloaf),
Well that’s as boring as humanly possible.
I didn’t know Sprint was still around.
Their Atl coverage is so poor they may as well not be around.
Disappointing and past boring staying empty would have been better at least we could still speculate
I don’t get these comments. Really? People would have an empty building? Some of yall need to go live at serene.
