this kind of food at these prices says a lot about Decatur.
and i’m not sure i like it.
irrational food exuberance bubble
It says that Kevin Gillespie thinks there’s a bunch of suckers willing to pony up $50+ per person for meat-and-three fare. He’s probably right. But I don’t think I could order country fried Kobe beef rou…hell, I can’t even type it without LOLing!
The folks who live in the townhouses across the street could make a mint cooking up meatloaf in bulk and selling it on paper plates for 5 bucks from their front stoop. You could probably serve as a culinary consultant.
Anyone that needs a culinary consultant for meatloaf has no business selling meatloaf!
I was just tryna get you some work.
The meatloaf must be a cold slice between two pieces of mayo-lathered white bread.
And ketchup. Pickle optional.
“irrational food exuberance bubble” 🙂
I think the prices are very high. $20-something entrees without sides? I have been excited about this addition to our ‘hood, but I guess I’ll have to wait for a (very) special occasion to give it a try. Y’all let me know what you think!
Oh, I can let you know what I think without trying it.
Wise. Can you fry steak on your egg?
Well, I COULD. But I’ve got a cast iron frying pan on the stovetop that’s better for something like that 🙂 I’m pretty sure I could use it to hickory smoke some greens. That bacon wrapped meatloaf is also great with a little smoke from the Egg. If I could charge Gillespie prices, I’d go into business. (Fm Fats would pay double!)
heads up: my friend cooked frozen tater tots on his BGE this weekend, and i nearly hurt him in a fight over the last one.
Just curious as to what kind of food at what kind of prices would say just the right thing about Decatur. In your opinion, of course.
Glad I am not the only one that was thinking that way.
Agreed! These prices are crazy. Another reason ” regular” folks are leaving / getting pushed out. I wish him well, but I’ll only be stopping for dessert & coffee for a special treat
It takes some big balls to charge theses prices for meat-and-three. (That sounds dirty!)
I was disappointed to see the prices as well. I guess people are willing to pay for the “experience.” It looks like he’s going for a pricier version of the Dillard House. I can cook anything on that menu and I bet it would be almost as good. You can’t fool Southerners on Southern food.
While I think these prices will keep Revival as a special occasion place for us, Dillard House is $24/adult on weekends, and that doesn’t include tea and coffee like Revival plans to do. I think Kevin Gillespie ingredient and preparation standards will make the pricing comparatively fair to Dillard House standard.
Too beaucoup! Rent too damn high!!!
I have to agree with the comments so far. Too rich for my blood.
I was also excited about this new restaurant but my bank account can’t afford his fancy fried chicken
“awesome” chocolate cake? interesting name.
$9 for a plate of sliced vegetables, eh? For $9 I will run to YDFM, stuff a backpack with tomatoes/cukes/onions, and run it back to you anywhere in the 30030 ZIP code. I’ll slice ’em for you too, if you tip me.
Seems like he is encouraging patrons to do the $49 deal by the way all the a la carte options are priced so high. Wondering what portion size an “entrée for the table” deal would be?
Was thinking about going here at the end of the month for our anniversary. Now I am rethinking that idea.
$49 per person and no beer is included? That’s not MY Decatur.
Yall are pretty hilarious. Do you have any idea what it takes to run a restaurant these days?
I think the price range here is pretty similar to Kimball House, am I wrong? They seem to be doing just fine.
Gillespie’s restaurant will draw from all over the metro area.
I mean, I know the overhead is probably ridiculous, but a meat and three menu is hard to pull off here in the south at the prices he’s charging. With access to local butchers and farmers markets, almost any decent southern cook could pull off much of what’s on the menu at a fraction of the cost. That’s the part that’s hard to swallow. It’s essentially peasant food at a king’s price.
Granted, but for some of us factoring in clean-up after frying chicken is enough to tip the scale!
True, but I’ll eat Popeyes if I need a fried chicken fix. Home fried chicken in the skillet is a special treat for Sundays for special occasions.
I don’t think anyone really believed what we’d be getting with Revival was something like Our Way Cafe or anything. It was always going to be an “upscale take” on the meat and three. And the prices are in line, if not a bit cheaper, than other upscale eateries in Decatur.
I bet the sides are meant to share with the table.
Hmmmm…now that I think about it, the high prices will probably cut way down on the PWK crowd, which means I’m gonna have to bite the bullet & add this one to my rotation. 😛 (Provided, of course, that the food is actually tasty.)
Indeed
PWK?
Persons with kids
urban dictionary said ‘pretty white kids’ and that felt unlike Cuba to me.
The menu seems very predictable. I’d rather pay $10 at a meat and three run out of a shack. Pretty soon all these high priced Decatur restaurants are going to have a very positive impact on the restaurants charging $10-15 for us regular folks.
Seriously. Who do you think is paying all this money for Decatur houses? Tucker has some great housing deals plus you get Matthews Cafeteria for under $10!
The influx of rabid Gillespie followers from far and wide. I thank them for funding the Great Decatur Renaissance!
This comments string should come with a lawn that it can tell kids to get off of.
Or it could be that there is a great deal of merit to the comments.
Welcome to the neighborhood, Chef Gillespie. I’m sure you’ll continue to exceed expectations.
I really like Kevin Gillespie and his food, but don’t you think these prices are a bit steep for soul food?
Twisted Soul charges $18-$27 for entrees and $7-$12 for small plates.

Where is the outrage?
Haven’t taken my hard earned money to that restaurant either.
Exactly. But, to be fair, I would check out Twisted Soul at those prices before Revival. Their entrees at least come with two sides each, so it’s still significantly cheaper per person than the menu above.
Which is why I don’t eat there, either. No outrage, just not interested at those prices.
I think Gillespie has shown that his food will not be your typical fare. I think judging the price point prior to tasting the food and evaluating the experience is unfair.
Not unfair at all. And apparently Kevin Gillespie agreed because he’s changed the menu prices already.
Just checked the reservation site. Party of 2 can be seated Sunday at 9pm – first available time. Looks like they won’t miss the naysayers on the first round anyway.
So interesting that the comments here are mostly negative (pricing), vs the positive excitement shown in the comments on facebook posts of this info by DM and Decaturish.
I also noticed that.
The $49 option seems like a solid deal to me for Gillespie-level food. Obviously the traditional “meat & three” is just a jumping-off point for a more upscale concept that is designed to compete with the Kimball Houses and Cakes & Ales of the world, not the Our Ways or your mama’s home cooking.
The comments on here are much more critical than the comments on Kimball House at this stage. I’m thinking Mr. Gillespie is paying the price for being an outsider whereas the Kimball team was one of us.
I’m going at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. There are plenty of options for everyone in Decatur so if you don’t want to pay his prices, don’t go. I for one am excited to have Chef Gillespie in the neighborhood!
If this were a French restaurant no one would be commenting on the prices. It’s just that this place strikes a chord with long-timer Decaturites who are incredulous at the prices here, and the (new resident) folks that can afford them, whether it is for fried chicken or a 4 BR bungalow.
You are exactly right. I don’t paying for a unique food experience with high quality food. I just can’t stomach paying that much for regular southern fare that I grew up with.
Can we be both glad to have Mr. Gillespie (seems a very fine and talented fellow, indeed!) in the neighborhood whilst also casting a somewhat skeptical eye in the direction of the price point? I think so.
Decaturish is reporting that the previous menu was deemed inaccurate. A revised version with lower prices is now available. Did DM crankiness change the course of human history? Or at least local restaurant policy? Rise up!
How about that? 🙂
The Dequater is powerful indeed.
Being open Monday night is a big plus, because so many places are closed.
I intend to frequent this establishment early and often with both my children in tow. For those who don’t like it, consider Buckhead. Can’t wait to eat Gillespie Southern Fare.
Decaturish is reporting that there was an error in the menu pricing and that its being adjusted
He probably decided it wasn’t expensive enough.
This restaurant is not a “meat and three.” I know his PR person and she has consistently expressed that fact. It’s a sit down restaurant…and its a la carte prices are pretty consistent with other sit down restaurants in Atlanta/Decatur. If you want an actual meet and three, this just isn’t the place.
