Mayor Jim Baskett Will Not Seek Reelection in the Fall

    Decatur Metro | July 13, 2015 | 7:04 pm

JimBaskettI asked Mayor Baskett earlier today whether he would seek reelection in the fall.  Here is his reply to us…

Nick, I do not plan to seek reelection. I have had the great honor of serving on the City Commission since 1996. It is time to pursue other opportunities and make room for those who are eager to serve.

I am extremely grateful for all the support I’ve enjoyed from the voters, my colleagues on the Commission and our city staff. I love this city and will always be proud to say that I live in Decatur, Ga.

+1. Basket and the city planner were the driving force behind the tree preservation nightmare, and now they are jumping ship.

If you can’t say anything nice, don’t…um…I’m out…

I respect anyone who serves in an elective capacity in a community like this. Being here just a couple years, I would never, ever want to deal with all the people issues they have to deal with on a daily basis. I would last about 2 disgruntled, whiny citizens before I went into my “life isn’t fair” lecture at a commission meeting.

We need a really strong mayor with a vision for the future of Decatur. If we are going to stay the same size then do that. If we are going to annex, then be aggressive, or even politically ruthless about it, because that’s the only way its going to get done. Annex Avondale, Emory, Medlock, DeKalb Farmer’s Market and make your case with the legislature if you want. I don’t care either way personally, but the lack of leadership on a future vision for the city has been palpable since the former mayor left. Just seems like our city leaders are reacting to the shifting political landscape in the county rather than aggressively pursuing the best for the city.

        “Annex Avondale”

        No. And hell no.

+++1 Moderate – and I think we need to raise the compensation for mayor and commission to attract such leaders…

Thank you Mayor Baskett for all your great work. You’ve made a great contribution to this city over the past twenty years.
