Will be interesting to see what they do with Underground. Hard to envision it being upscale. But it would be pretty cool to live somewhere where your “basement” is full of restaurants, clubs, etc. Lack of a grocery store is a big problem down there, though.
Anyone know what was going down on Scott Boulevard this morning around 9am? Police & fire had it blocked between Superior and Clairemont and there was a ladder truck in the street.
Don’t know, but all the sirens going that way got one of our dogs howling while I was in the middle of a call with a client. Hope it was nothing too serious.
My understanding is that a private “bus” caught fire and that everyone was fine.
Guess I should have actually read the Underground article before commenting. They do plan on building a grocery store there. I think it would be the only grocery store on the MARTA Blue line within easy walking distance of a station (other than the mini Kroger).
If it’s a real supermarket for regular people who feed themselves and their families on a budget (not a Whole Foods with premium prices, or a Trader Joe’s that fills only part of the needs or a boutique deli/wine shop), it will be a HUGE game changer for residential downtown. Combine with the announced redevelopment of 222 Mitchell St. and watch a new day dawn. The area south of Five Points and east of Spring is full of empty buildings & lots just waiting for the right kindling to catch.
At one time there was a mini-Kroger in that same area, but it didn’t last long. I can’t recall the exact location. It would have been at least 10 years ago.
The mini-Kroger was on Pryor between Trinity and Mitchell, right across the street from Atlanta City Hall. It was in the ground floor of the apartments on that block. Rumor was that the high incidence of shoplifting played a part in its closing (it was about 10 years ago). There was a McDonald’s on the corner next to it which was replaced by a pizza place.
Thanks for confirming and refreshing my memory.
Agreed. Publix, maybe? Kroger hasn’t shown much interest in building new stores in urban areas (though I guess the planned one at Lindberg would be an exception).
The developer has experience with Walmart. They built the one in Chamblee with the underground parking deck.
Walmart would contradict Reed’s statement that the development would tilt toward upscale. But he may be guilty of wishful thinking.
I grew up near one of the worst K-Mart I have ever been in. Walmart would be considered upscale next to it. Also, we could pronounce it “Vol-mar” and just make it sound swankier almost immediately.
+1
The K-Marts in some parts of Southern California used to be so bad that there was a whole humor genre based on them. Unfortunately, some of it was racist/xenophobic.
A small-scale Publix (like the ones at Atlantic Station, Midtown, Piedmont/North Ave.) located at Underground Atlanta would be a dream come true. In addition to downtown residents (much more numerous than most would expect), there are hordes of people working downtown who would find it extremely handy.
