Trees Being Removed for Oakhurst Streetscape Improvements This Week Will Be Replaced
Decatur Metro | December 8, 2014 | 11:07 amFrom the Decatur Minute…
Oakhurst streetscape contractor CMES will continue preliminary construction activities and will begin removal of several trees in the project area on December 8. Three large trees to be removed have been repeatedly damaged by utility line clearance. Other trees to be removed are in areas that will be impacted by new, wider sidewalks and more generous outdoor dining areas. Because the off-street parking lot at Harmony Park will be removed to increase the size of the park, one large tree will be removed to provide an area for replacement angled parking.
Changes to the landscape are always dramatic. However, new trees will be planted throughout the project area as part of the streetscape improvements, including large shade trees where not in conflict with overhead utilities.
I thought the goal of a blog operator was to drive traffic. When you preemptively post something like this, you forestall numerous posts from the tree mafia about our terrible city leaders hastening the end of the world by allowing evil developers to remove trees.
It’s actually quite responsible and commendable on DM’s part. Who knows what kind of vigilantree justice was prevented…
Simmer down, fellahs. There’s still plenty of opportunities to pull a rifle on whatever tree company put in the low bid. And from that, comments!
Well, Dawgfan, at least the post puts your idle hands to work. God knows where they’d be otherwise..:)
Just wait until the dog park is clear cut.
I am pre-seething in anticipation.
HAH! Exactly. The gnashing of teeth is already well under way.
Has anyone calculated the percentage decrease in canopy that this will bring?
Nobody cared about tree canopy years ago when this plan was developed and approved. Back then, people worried about pedestrians getting run down by vehicles speeding through the village. The little kids from that era are now driving.
Wait, are you telling me that the tree canopy measurement was hoisted upon us just recently?
Wondering how many of the trees being removed are Bradford pears that need to come down before long, anyway.
I stared at ’em real hard just to make sure they knew we wouldn’t forget if they didn’t replace those trees.
