Decatur Creates Restaurant Tour Website
Decatur Metro | November 15, 2013 | 10:55 amFrom Decatur’s Public Information Officer Casie Yoder…
Decatur’s newest culinary destination is online: DecaturRestaurant-Tour.com. The website offers video tours in addition to personal interviews with six of the city’s most popular chefs and restauranteurs. “Decatur offers a unique combination of trends and traditions, from contemporary cafes to dining landmarks” according to Linda Harris, who handles communication for the City and is the Executive Director of the Decatur Tourism Bureau. She believes this was a major reason for Decatur being named one of “America’s top Foodie Cities” by Southern Living Magazine. “The videos felt like an authentic way to experience the ambience, signature dishes and personalities that give each eatery its own flavor.”
Phase one of the website is live with six videos hosted by Mary Moore, the popular chef-turned-retailer behind Decatur’s Cook’s Warehouse. Mary visits No. 246, Leon’s Full Service, The Iberian Pig, Cafe Alsace, Steinbeck’s and Cafe Lily. Her knowledge and experience bring interesting insights to the subject of creative cuisine. Moore explained “the videos are an ideal way to show dimensions of a restaurant you just can’t get from listings or review sites. Preparing food has a lot to do with creative expression, and the personal interviews give a better understanding of this.”
The Decatur Tourism Bureau is already in pre-production for the next six videos. The goal of DecaturRestaurant-Tour is to be inclusive, a value often evident in the Decatur community.
Both a tourism and economic development effort, the videos are the result of online user research. “We learned that a significant number of people searching for Decatur were looking for dining options. The website is designed to make it easier, while offering a more rewarding experience” Harris added.
The Tourism Bureau will celebrate the launch of the site with a promotion for consumers: Starting today, the first 4 people to complete the tour (currently 6 restaurants) and present receipts at the Visitors Center will be rewarded with $100 Visa Gift certificate and a Tour T-shirt. The T-shirt giveaway will continue for anyone that completes the tour and presents receipts through the end of the year. In addition, the person who “checks in” the greatest number of times with Four Square at a participating restaurant will win a $100 dining card and T-Shirt as well.

This is great. I’m looking forward to seeing more things added as it grows. She should add one specifically for The Cook’s Warehouse.
What is Four Square?
Given your admitted bewilderment in the streaming television discussion, I’m not sure I have the fortitude to try and extrapolate this for you… 😉 Suffice to say, it’s a social media app that’s probably not something you’d be likely to use.
We all know Carl is going to win this anyway.
Seems like a good idea. I hope all ating establishments get a shot, not just those those that play ball with the chi chi crowd, but solid, low cost, local favorites. Let consumers pick the winners and losers, not public infornation officers.
And am I the only one concerned about a public infomaton officer?
Hey Mr B, what are your favorite decatur restaurants- including old standbys and any newer places?
Thanks Mac. By myself- Chick-fil-A, Dairy Queen, Jimmy Johns, all usually for lunch but I can eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at CfA (Spicy Chicken Burrito and Hash Browns, Cool Chick Wrap or the old standby CfA sandwich, and for dinner a Cobb salad with ranch dressing- Got to make the last meal healthy). For dinner we enjoy Tex Cantina (good food, friendly staff and free and easy parking close by), Brick Store, Leon’s, and on special occasions, Parker’s and Iberian Pig. I’m looking forward to trying the new place at the old depot but waiting until they drop the price on the oysters or find a 50% off coupon in the AJC. Thanks for asking.
Just got back from Big Tex myself. For the Depeaux/Kimball House, go between 5 and 7 weekdays and the oysters are half off. I don’t eat sea creatures, but my friend was really happy with her discoumted assortment.
This is a great idea. I wonder if they’ll get a new interviewer for future videos. The woman is boring and not very engaging.
I think she does a fine job. The interview should not be about the interviewer but about the interviewee.
Seems to me that the restaurants here include both new and old and high end and low end. Cafe Lily and Alcase have been around for quite some time. Steinbecks is not high end or chi chi by any means.
I wonder if Mr B has even ventured down to Oakhurst?
Someone’s just not gonna be happy until Chick-fil-a is added.
How much longer until the return of the McRib?
If you lived in some gawd forsaken cold place like Brooklyn or North Dakota, I could see eating a McRib and thinking it was pretty good. But you are in the South, land of BBQ, and there is real, yummy, bbq pig all around.
I love Fox Bros. I eat McRibs. So sue me…
Lately I feel like the two aren’t that far apart…
Haters gonna hate. But that’s good because the place gets too crowded as it is. You get between me and my smoked wings or my brisket burger and you’ll be sorry.
You’re assuming that lump is denigrating Fox Bros. but perhaps it’s a compliment to the McRib. I’ve been seeing a lot of ads lately for BK’s version. Anybody try it yet?
