CL’s 2011 Best of Atlanta Out and About
Decatur Metro | September 22, 2011 | 2:50 pm
Decatur – and the surrounding area – picked up a good number of Loafies this year! Among the one’s I saw in my casual search…
- Best Suburb – Decatur
- Local Poet and Best Spoken Word Artist – Kodac Harrison
- Best Book Event – Decatur Book Festival
- Best Acoustic Music Club – Eddie’s Attic
- Best Pool Hall – Twain’s
- Best Patio – Wahoo!
- Best Waitstaff and Cocktails – Leon’s Full Service
- Best French Food – Cafe Alsace
- Best Cookies – Cookie Studio
- Best Fried Chicken – Watershed
- Best Beer Selection – Brick Store Pub
- Best Local Boutique – Squash Blossom
- Best Consignment Store – Finder’s Keepers
- Best Antique Market – Kudzu
- Neighborhood Hardware Store – Intown Ace Hardware
Let me know what I missed!

Hmmm…. Age-wise, I have always considered Atlanta a suburb of Decatur. Or perhaps it ‘s just our “office community”.
That’s purty cool. But “best book event” is a rather softball category eh?
Leon’s got best cocktails and Miles, formerly of Brickstore, and now Leon’s got best mixologist.
Not exclusively Decatur, but Taqueria del Sol won best tacos.
Yes . . . Cafe Alsace, my favorite!!!
That’s funny. One Finders Keepers is in Avondale and the other in unicorporated Dekalb, but neither is in Decatur.
Best Indian food – Bhojanic. Sort of N Decatur, but still Decatur, imo.
Thought I saw something about the new bike lanes.
Yes indeed!
Like “paradise for progressives”.
What about best volunteer program? No way any other program could have won! I couldn’t find the list on their website.
Hands On Atlanta won Best Volunteer Program.
Hands On Atlanta is a worthy organization. But if everyone who ever volunteered for Volunteer! Decatur had voted, we could have grabbed it.
Twain’s has a lot going for it… but “best pool hall” is not one of them. 90% of their customers wouldn’t know a cue stick from 2×4. Great place for a lot of things.. but not pool.
Uh, Bob. Have you noticed that they have about 178 pool tables. Almost always filled with players. They were playing pool at Twain’s (where the fish tank is now) before Decatur’s cool factor hit 10. In fact, I would say, Twain’s pool tables helped create today’s Decatur.
Nope, nope, nope! The “real pool players” were always just where they are now. The upstairs/front was the non-smoking pool table area. The current back room pool area was the smoking section. That’s where the sharks and prey have always been!
I stand corrected, JT. But the point being – the place is often full of sharks and prey, which sounds like a good pool hall to me.
Fond memories of many a late night on Twain’s patio!
YDFM won best specialty market. It’s not in Decatur though, so you DEFINITELY shouldn’t mention it.
Community BBQ!!!!
Decatur does rock!
Last night I was reading the Creative Loafing listings while eating at Community BBQ when I cam across their listing as Best BBQ. The owner came over and I just said to him while showing him the paper: “I am reading about it while eating it!”
Best Suburb? Not sure I consider our TOWN a suburb…better best than worst though.
This isn’t the first time Decatur has been a suburb in CL’s poll. I don’t think there was another category that fit, though.
Inman Park calls itself Atlanta’s oldest suburb. I guess anything that’s not downtown Atlanta is a suburb
My understanding is that Inman Park was truly built as a suburb for Atlantans working in downtown Atlanta, trolley line, trolley barn, and all. Whereas Decatur was a separate city from the beginning.
In fact, Decatur was a city back when Atlanta was just “Terminus!”
Eddie’s Attic also won “Best Place to Hear Local Music!”
Staff pick for best new old restaurant – cakes and ale and best evolution of decatur – no.246
Does anyone else have a problem with Monica Pearson continually being named as the best news anchor? Have you seen her lately? Her phasing is terrible, she mispronounces or completely misses words on a daily basis and gushes at everything, good or bad. Why doesn’t she just retire?
