Best Contractor for an Addition?

Hey there, I’m looking to build out my attic space some time this year and was wondering whether DM readers had recommendation on general contractors for the job. Money is always a concern, but I’m primarily looking to get the best bang for my buck. I’d really appreciate it if you could post. Thanks!

I would highly recommend Bob Crochet & Associates (404.320.9878) Since completing our addition 10 years ago, we developed a friendship and I have used him for numerous projects large and small over those years. He spent a lot of upfront time with me to give me an idea of his process, scheduling and costs involved and came in on time and on budget. A great guy.
Thanks Rick. Can you comment on the quality? I’m more concerned with quality than cost. If the quality is sub par you can wind up spending more in the long run to make it right.
Sarah-
Yes…quality was my main reason for satisfaction. The budget and timeframe were a close second. The working relationship and subsequent friendship was icing on the cake. We had no issues with shoddy materials or craftsmanship…any minor things (like interior caulking shrinking due to change of seasons/settling were corrected at no charge) I hope to be able to use him again for future projects.
I recommend Jim Williams at Covered Dish construction: [email protected] . Detail oriented and experienced.
I’d recommend Lawrence Stacconi (http://www.angieslist.com/companylist/us/ga/atlanta/lawrence-stacconi-llc-reviews-6167873.aspx). He’s done some work for me that has been of excellent quality with great attention to detail.
We are currently having our attic renovated to include a master suite and guest bed/bath. We’re working with Karl Alspach, who did similar work for two of our neighbors. He is very trustworthy and does good work at a reasonable price. He’s been great to work with us so we could stay within our budget.
You’re welcome to come by and see what they’re doing on our home. Just reply and I’ll send our info.

Thought you might want to take a look at this before you start on your new project.

Unless of course you’re upgrading from a thatch roof.
Is that your house?
My father, Steve Burk, is an amazing framer. He also does trim, cabinet work, and furniture making. He’s been working as a sub-contractor and an independent for over 30 years in the Atlanta area. Not sure if he is booked right now or not, but his number is 678-908-3802. He doesn’t have an e-mail address or website. His clientele comes from referrals due to the high quality of his work. Just a suggestion.
When we got quotes from several contractors, we were interested to see that Decatur outfits are way pricier than people we found from the ‘burbs. Something to think about.
Simon Reynolds at Reynovations ([email protected] ) did two renovations for us. His work is really superlative, and he is great to work with. He is particularly good about working with energy efficiency solutions.
Eric Sullivan (of Sullivan Homes) did our renovation. He is extremely honest, his subs are hardowrking, and he has lived in Decatur for 5+ years.
+1! Excellent work. Great guy!
Struby Construction in Oakhurst is still a best-kept secret. They did a 2BR/1BA second-story addition for us in 2009, finishing ahead of schedule and right on budget. Excellent work, good ideas, and they even got the project certified as an EarthCraft House. http://www.StrubyConstruction.com
I second the Struby Construction recommendation. Neil Struby is a top-notch contractor with great ideas. He is very honest, hardworking and environmentally focused. I have used Struby Construction for a small project in my house, and they are currently doing a beautiful second story addition to a friend’s house. We plan to use them for our next renovation.
i concur. A true professional with a personal, local touch. Neil completed a bathroom, screen porch and deck addition on my Oakhurst home in Nov. 2009. Completely pleased then and now.
Regardless of who you use, you should definitely seek out a green, energy efficient certification such as EarthCraft House, one of the few available for renovation projects. If done properly your larger home will have lower energy bills, be much more comfortable, have cleaner and healthier indoor air, and will last longer with lower maintenance.
Being an interior designer I am happy to hear all of these replies for future job references. I have heard other good comments about Bob Crochet (that is Bob the builder’s name!). As a side note if you need help with finishes or other interior work please see http://www.cfraines.com.
Penn Carpentry – they have been the general contractor on a large addition and a bathroom renovation and they are delightful to work with.
We are currently using Cobalt Contracting, and have not had a single issue thus far. We are the 4th home they have worked on in Medlock Park. Everyone seems to have a great experience with them. http://cobaltcontracting.com/
DSM Construction – Steven Sanders-Myers – [email protected] — He is in the middle of a project at our house now.. Doing a great job.. Highly recommend!
We have used Home Forge Remodeling for two bathrooms and some other smaller jobs and I have recommended them to friends who have also used them very happily. They are terrific! The work is top-quality, they are professional, reasonable, efficient and so pleasant to have around that we were almost sorry to see the guys leave at the end of the job! Check out their work at http://www.homeforgeremodeling.com/. Their number is 404-371-0102.
Bob Crochet is without a doubt the best contractor in the area. The quality of his work is superior. He is more than fair in his pricing. He will go above and beyond to make sure you are pleased with your final product. And he is just a great guy to work with…easy to talk to and he really listens to the customer. He has done the following renovations for me…..Kitchen, Den, Dining Room, Living Room , Screen Porch, Swimming Pool, Bathroom…..if you would like to see his work feel free to contact me and come visit,,,[email protected] Bob’s contact number = 404-310-5654.
I highly, highly recommend Fitzgerald Construction:

Highly recommend Paulmann Construction! They were very professional during our kitchen and laundry room reconfiguration, and we were very pleased with the entire process–from design to construction to cleanup. The quality of their work is outstounding.

I can’t praise our builder enough, who still checks in with us every other month or so, two years after the project. He has also subsequently recommended dozens of excellent technicians for maintenance and smaller projects. The work is top quality and everything was kept on schedule & budget, and left very clean–ready to move in. His name is Gus Pounds:

My friend Volkmar Wochatz should also be mentioned. He lives in Decatur and has a loyal following among the homeowners he has worked with. He does quality work, much of it himself. He’s the fine artisan responsible for all the curved woodwork at Leon’s:

We’ve used Scialabba Construction for two projects at our home…one was a deck addition and the second was some super cool built-ins on either side of our fireplace. Owner, Michael, and his brother Joey are very hard workers who are dedicated to their craft. And, compared to other contractors, they are VERY inexpensive for the quality of workmanship.

Side note: they have also been the contractors on two TV shows…”Deserving Design” and “Mega Dens,” which is actually airing now on DIY Network.
Give Jeff Hayden a call. He is a long time Decatur resident, General Contractor. I highly recommend his services. 404-370-1121.
Laughing Sun Renovations just completed work on my second home in Avondale Estates. Kara was enormously helpful.
