Weird question, but does anyone know how wide Glenlake pool is?

I meant to say this last Friday, but the new Blue Elephant location is awesome. It’s small, but the set up gives off a cozy vibe, and encourages aimless browsing (something I like in a bookstore!). I ended up buying four books I had no intention of buying when I went in. Welcome to the neighborhood, Blue Elephant!

A few comments on the new Glenlake dog park:

      1) where are all the dogs? is it too hot?
      2) the gates are already broken. was it a poor choice of equipment or do people not understand how to work the latches?
      3) while the water fountain for the dogs is a good idea, it is almost always clogged – not draining correctly. assuming dog hair is the culprit.

It’s to hot for my black dogs.

The BEST gyros are at Nick’s Greek Corner (Nick’s Food To Go) in Grant Park / Downtown. It’s a 10 minute drive from Decatur, but oh what a gyro.

Thanks to the comments on free for all friday a couple of weeks ago we checked out the new Snowball place in the old Cafe Cliche space. It was incredible! The owners were so friendly and the snowballs were delicious! I highly recommend it!

      • karass says:

We have been twice and tried:
        – Lemon/lime
        – Coconut
        – Pink Lemonade

The best was a concoction they called “like a Mounds Bar”–coconut with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and a cherry.

I was coming here JUST to rave about the sno-ball place – glad to see someone beat me to it! They’re so NICE and they give kids under 4 a small cup of their own for free. I hope they stick around for a long time.

The snow cone place is great. The smallest size is $1.50, so you can go and get a little snow cone without having to commit to a huge dessert.

I hit up Garlic Thai last night. It was great! $1 sushi every night between 5:30-7:30. The Jungle Curry, Spicy Basil and Nam Num Tok were fantastic. Some of the best Thai I’ve had in a while.

I’ve been trying to figure this out for a couple weeks now. The misses and I saw them pull all the existing stuff outta there a couple weeks back, but those folks didn’t know what was going in.

Too bad Carl is out of town or we’d know by now! :-)

    12. Liz says:
      June 25, 2010 at 12:52 pm

Just finished carpool duty at summer camp, and almost half of the drivers picking up children were on their cell phones. I am amazed that with little people swarming the car pool lane, most who aren’t tall enough to be visible, someone who is a parent would endanger children this way. Let’s not rely on legislators to make it illegal, or police to enforce it, but as a society can’t we make this unacceptable behavior?

      • Diane says:
        June 25, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Not only that, but think of how polluted the air around the playground is from all of those engines idling nearby to pick up little ones. Would it really be that much bother to ask folks to park and come inside to get a child. Would insure that they would hang up the phone, and would cut down on pollution.

      • DEM says:
        June 25, 2010 at 3:31 pm

My idea: eliminate the automatic transmission. Having to shift makes it almost impossible to talk on a cell phone (unless it is a handless device). It also, in my opinion, forces a driver to pay closer attention to speed and road conditions. The automatic transmission, onthe other hand, is what enables our current epidemic of distracted, cell-phone driving.

        • karass says:
          June 25, 2010 at 3:35 pm

This is an excellent idea. For many vehicles now, e.g. mini-vans, there is no stick shift option, even if you want it.

          • DEM says:
            June 25, 2010 at 3:57 pm

It’s far worse than that. There are sport sedans you can’t even get as a stick shift now. Acura TL doesn’t come in a stick. And I am pretty sure Mercedes stopped making stick shifts, though I may be mistaken. Even BMW and Audi have made sticks the exception, not the rule.

            • fifi says:
              June 26, 2010 at 11:17 pm

Sad to think that driving a stick will become a lost art .

        • cranky old timer says:
          June 25, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Then everyone would put it in neutral and coast while talking on their cellphones … I miss my five speed Mustang ..had to trade it in for a family car …sigh …

      • cubalibre says:
        June 25, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Why are you amazed that “someone who is a parent” could be so careless? People who’re monumentally self-absorbed (as I believe anyone is who feels as if s/he must constantly natter into a cellphone, no matter where they are) aren’t concerned with anyone but themselves, regardless of whether they’ve procreated. Sad, isn’t it? I don’t even have kids, but you can bet when I’m near a school or have my nieces/nephews (or friends’ kids) in my car, I drive like a granny & don’t even answer my cell…if it’s important, someone can leave a message!

        • nelliebelle1197 says:
          June 26, 2010 at 7:45 pm

Which reminds me of the jerks who pick up their kids at Oakhurst Elementary, disregard the no parking signs on one side of the road or drive their giant gas guzzlers on the wrong side of the road and expect you to yield to them even though THEY ARE DRIVING ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD AND ARE SUPPOSED TO YIELD TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. One lovely pinch faced creature even said to me “it’s school pick up. I should be able to have the right of way”. I am sure, dear cupcake, you know that I did not.

          MANNERS AND CIVILITY ARE DEAD

          • cubalibre says:
            June 28, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Gads (I LOLed@ “lovely pinch faced creature”– the mental images of you withering her with a look are priceless). It’s this kind of attitude that makes me miss the days when most parents made sure to teach their offspring some manners & comportment, so they wouldn’t think the sun rose & set in their @$$holes and grow up to be self-important, over-entitled turds who embarrass them in public. Now, it’s the parents who are self-important, over-entitled turds– their kids don’t have a chance!

            • nelliebelle1197 says:
              June 28, 2010 at 6:52 pm

I always say that if anyone had manners these days, we’d actually have civilization.

Hey, join me on Mead after school one day in August so we can glare together 😉

      • decatur mom says:
        June 26, 2010 at 7:15 am

At the preschool my kids attended, and at their elem. school, there was a strict “when you come through the carpool line, you must hang up your cellphone” policy. It would seem easy enough to put that in a newsletter, or camp materials.

Try Parker’s on Ponce for your fried green tomatoes–delish–topped with goat cheese and toasted pecans. Might go get some this weekend……..

          Second that.
We ordered that last Sunday. I never had fried green tomatoes before so I can’t compare it but Parker’s was very good.

I would like to also say how great the new snowball place is. I took my kids there last week. We had strawberry, bubblegum and the “wedding cake”. I thought the wedding cake was so good and I don’t normally like dessert unless it’s chocolate.

My husband and I tried the new Thai place and we thought it was great except for the service! We sat at the bar and still got neglected from our waiter.

    15. guest says:
      June 25, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Disagree. I don’t know the answer to Nicole’s question, but we were sorely disappointed by the fried green tomatoes at Parkers. They were soft and soggy and had little flavor. Pretty hard to mess up fried green tomatoes, but they did.

    16. karass says:

Has anyone tried the new Korean dessert place, Sun-O, in the old Jake’s Ice Cream spot at N. Decatur and Clairemont? How is it?

      • Marla says:
        June 25, 2010 at 9:22 pm

I’m ADDICTED to SunO (I’d been to the one in Athens before). The SunO desserts are good but the BUBBLE TEA is what makes it great. Highly highly recommended. Also the staff/owners are super nice and friendly. Another great addition to the area.

Noticed today that Wild Seed Boutique (in the Town Square Condo building) is empty except for one dress form and one shoe. I’d never actually seen anyone in there (and I do mean ANYONE) so I’m not entirely surprised…

Is Relics and Rarities (the Ice Cream and classic cars place on McDonough) open regularly? We stopped by there after the Decatur Beach party with our kids, during their posted business hours, and they were closed. It would be a nice treat for our kids some time, but I don’t want to promise it to them and then go by and have it be closed again.

    20. decatur mom says:
      June 26, 2010 at 7:12 am

And on the “closed” theme, my husband walked from his office to Badda Bing yesterday (Friday) to get lunch and they were closed. He thought Friday at lunchtime was an unusual time to be closed. I hope they were just closed for the day and not for good.

      • DarenW says:
        June 26, 2010 at 8:09 am

Michael and Badda Bing are doing fine and still open. Their core business is catering, not retail. So it is not uncommon for them to close down when they have a big event to handle.

Anyone know what happened at the small Kroger last night? I drove by about 8:30ish, and there were 3 or 4 COD police cars either sitting in, or pulling out of the parking lot with lights flashing. I was behind one of the units that pulled out, and noticed they had someone in the back?
