"Crawford Long" is Victim of Marketing
Decatur Metro | February 13, 2009 | 9:13 amxokyditive sends in this note about a name change for Emory’s Crawford Long Hospital…
Crawford Long, one of 19th Century Georgia’s most notable figures, is having his hospital renamed “Emory University Hospital Midtown” (apparently with no punctuation)
And is it really Midtown if it’s south of North Ave?
The website’s already been changed: cached page from last week, after new name copy/paste
Ironically, six months ago they made a big thing of the Crawfish’s 100th Anniversary.

Emory Makes Two Naming Announcements
Dear Emory Community:
We are excited to make not one but two important naming announcements. First, after much research and discussion to reach this day, we want to share the news that Emory is renaming Emory Crawford Long Hospital as Emory University Hospital Midtown following the Board of Trustees’ approval earlier today.
We believe the renaming will more clearly identify Emory University Hospital Midtown as an Emory University owned and operated facility. Changing Emory Crawford Long to Emory University Hospital Midtown will fuel progress toward the Woodruff Health Sciences Center’s goal of being the 21st century model for an academic health sciences and services center. The new name will enhance the hospital’s already impressive reputation in the community – enabling even greater opportunities for cutting-edge research, world-class education, and high-quality patient- and family-centered care.
In addition, the visibility of Emory University Hospital Midtown to the highway and public transportation lines will highlight this hospital as the clinical powerhouse it is amidst the heart of Atlanta’s business district. Emory is committed to continuing to honor the more than 100-year history by retaining the original name, Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital, on exterior monuments.
Second, we are proud to tell you that the new School of Medicine education building opened last year will bear the name of Trustee Emeritus and Emory alumnus James B. Williams, retired chairman and CEO of SunTrust Banks. The naming, approved by the Board of Trustees, honors Mr. Williams’ 35 years of service on the Emory University Board of Trustees and to the University, and his leadership as chairman for over 20 years on the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Board, the component of the Board charged with governance of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, including the medical school.
It is particularly appropriate that this honor happens to be announced on the same day as the hospital name change. Mr. Williams’ transformative vision for the health sciences at Emory helped make possible completion of a new medical office tower at the Midtown hospital campus as well as the building which now bears his name.
As always, thank you for all that you do to support Emory’s mission, and help us transform health and healing…together.
