DHS Flu Shot Clinic Cancelled

October 8, 2009 | 1:04 pm

Dana fowards a note from CSD’s Sally Dobbins announcing that the scheduled flu clinic at Decatur High School today has been cancelled due to an overwhelming response at Glennwood Academy yesterday.   Here’s the note…

Good Morning,

I wanted to let you all know that unfortunately the flu shot clinic for today has to be cancelled because of a seasonal vaccine shortage at the Board of Health. We had an amazing turnout yesterday at GL and at the end of the clinic I was informed that all the allotted vaccine for the 2 days had been used. I am very sorry and appreciate your help and participation in this endeavor. We will reschedule in November. The BOH health folks expressed their apologies also and will be cancelling other clinics at other community sites as well.

Thanks again.

Sally

Glennwood Kids Bike to the Capitol

March 6, 2009 | 9:40 am

Kids from left to right: Max Holland, Noah Watts-Hull, Paul Coiron, Emily Sciarrone, Terry Cronic, Jude Holmes, Boyd Brim, Brogan Ellis, Jack Bricker and Sienna Elliott

This past Tuesday, cyclists from all over metro Atlanta headed to the Capitol to promote bike awareness.  And while many of the photos and stories I’ve seen thus far about the two-wheeled campaign have focused on area political leaders sporting smart-looking helmets, there was another group from Decatur that was perhaps even more unique.  Kids.

Cathy writes in and sends along a great photo (above)…

10 kids from Glennwood Academy along with several parents, joined the Georgia Rides to the Capitol campaign.  Riding behind a 12-motorcycle police escort, the kids joined Mayor Bill Floyd and hundreds of other cyclists to raise awareness about the need for the development of a regional-scale bicycle network of both on-road facilities and multi-use-trails, and a pedestrian network focused around major transit facilities and activity centers and near schools.

Thousands of cyclists converged on the Capitol to hear legislators speak to this effort.

The only kids there were from Decatur.  Pretty cool.

Decatur Featured in US School Commute Exercise Program Article

October 26, 2007 | 1:13 pm

Washington Post

Amy Lovell and her 10-year-old son Allen arrive with his French horn on bicycles at Glennwood Academy (Washington Post)

Where do AP reporters go when they need a good example of kids walking and biking to school for a story about the Federal “Safe Routes to School” program? Decatur of course!

Washington Post

International Tribune

San Francisco Examiner

I think this “evergreen” AP story has been around for a couple weeks, since I recall seeing it in the local papers a few weeks ago. But now it seems its making the rounds amongst the big boys.
