Decatur PD: Keep Eye Out For White Chevy Tahoe

From Decatur PD…

On 2-14-14, there were two additional burglaries reported to APD.  One on Tupelo Street between 9 am – 4 pm and one in the 2700 block of Hosea L. Williams Boulevard between 8:30 am – 5 pm.  A neighbor of the victim of the burglary in the 2700 block of Hosea L. Williams Boulevard later reported seeing a white SUV near the victim’s residence between 4:30 – 5 pm.  A community member has since reported seeing a white Chevrolet Tahoe displaying GA tag PDI4825 in the 3rd Avenue area.  This is one digit off from what was previously provided and appears to be the correct tag number.  Please continue to look out for this vehicle and call police immediately if you see it in the area.

Decatur and Atlanta Police Investigate Series of Recent Burglaries That Appear To Be Related

From Decatur PD…

*Related to previous alert sent out on 2-9-14 reference Saturday afternoon burglary in Oakhurst in the 600 block of 2nd Avenue.

Please continue to watch out for your neighbors and report any unknown vehicles or persons on their property.  If you receive an unexpected knock on the door, it may be a ploy to determine if anyone is home before a burglary is attempted.  Asking “Who is it?” through the door is a safer option than opening the door for a stranger and also alerts a potential burglar that the home is occupied.

In the past six days, the following incidents have been reported and appear to be related.  Atlanta PD Zone 6, Decatur PD and DeKalb PD are working together to locate and identify these suspects.  Please be aware and call police immediately if you see a vehicle matching the description in the area or encounter a scenario such as those detailed in the following incidents.

–       On Saturday, 2-8-14, a resident in the 200 block of 3nd Avenue reported an attempted burglary where suspects damaged the front door but were unable to gain entry.  A neighbor later reported having seen a white Chevrolet Tahoe occupied by 3-4 black males in front of the victim’s house at approximately 2 pm.  The suspects fled when the neighbor came outside.

–       On Saturday, 2-8-14 at approximately 2:45 pm, APD responded to a residential alarm in the 2800 block of Tupelo Street.  The side door to the residence was kicked in.  Based on the size of a television stolen, it is likely a SUV or truck was used.

–       On Saturday, 2-8-14 at approximately 2:25 pm, APD responded to a suspicious vehicle in the 100 block of 2nd Avenue.  A homeowner reported seeing a white Suburban or Tahoe displaying Georgia Tag #PDT4825 pull all the way up into the driveway, close to the house.  A male in the backseat began yelling at the driver to leave because the homeowner was looking through his blinds.  The tag belongs on another vehicle.

–       On Saturday, 2-8-14 between 2-4:45 pm, a burglary occurred in the 600 block of 2nd Avenue (Decatur) where it appeared the suspects used a vehicle to force a locked rear gate open and kick in the rear door to the residence.  A neighbor reported seeing a beige SUV, believed to be a Ford Explorer, occupied by two black males leaving the alley behind the victim’s residence at approximately 2:30 pm.  The driver of the beige SUV was described as having a light complexion and wearing a red baseball cap.  *It is unknown if the vehicle described by the neighbor was involved but due to time frame, location and method the crime was committed, this incident appears to be related.

–       On Tuesday, 2-11-14, APD responded to a burglary in the 2000 block of Knox Street where the suspects accessed the rear door through a pet entrance.  Surveillance video in the area showed a white Chevrolet Tahoe arriving in the area, backing into the victim’s driveway, 3-4 suspects going to the rear of the house and leaving between 1:33-1:41 pm. (See attached photos of suspect vehicle and one suspect)

–       On Thursday, 2-13-14 at approximately 1 pm APD responded to an attempted burglary on 1st Avenue between Hosea Williams Boulevard and Memorial Drive.  The victim reported that the day before, Wednesday, 02-12-14, an unknown black male knocked on his front door and asked for “Sally” when he answered.  After being told there was no “Sally” living there, the male hesitated until a second adult who lives in the house appeared and the male turned and left.  On 02-13-14 at approximately 1 pm, the same male knocked on the front door and the residents ignored it.  The male then went to the back door and attempted to kick it in.  The homeowners began yelling and the male fled to a white Chevrolet Tahoe with black door handles that was occupied by a second black male visible in the front passenger seat.  The male who came to the door both days was described as being in his 20’s, approximately 6′, slim build, light complexion, wearing brown boots and a large belt.

Woman Shot and Killed in Midtown Parking Deck Friday was a Decatur Resident

Many of you may have already heard about this tragic story yesterday, how a security guard shot and killed one woman and injured two others in a Midtown parking deck.

Well, I’m grieved to tell you that I was informed earlier today that the victim, Brittney Watts, and her husband were Decatur residents, having moved to the north-side of the city just a month ago.

Many elements of the story are still unclear – though the local news media is doing its usual darnedest to intrude on the privacy of a grieving family – but regardless, I thought everyone out in the Decatur community should know that this woman was a local Decatur resident.

I don’t know what we can or should do for her husband, family and friends at this point, but I figured if nothing else, they might appreciate a few kind words from the community at this time.

My most sincere condolences to them all.

Man Shot in Kirkwood

The AJC is reporting that a man has been “shot in the head” near the 2070 block of Ridgedale Road in Kirkwood, and that Atlanta PD homicide detectives are en route.

Decatur Police Arrest Kroger Purse Snatcher

More good work by the Decatur police.

I wrote a note to DPD this morning asking about a “robbery” near Kroger, which showed up on Crimereports.com, this past weekend.  An hour later I received this Decatur Police Arrest Alert:

On Saturday, August 1, 2009, a “robbery by snatch” occurred in the parking lot of 720 Commerce Drive. Approximately 15 minutes later Decatur Police officers arrested the suspect without incident. The stolen purse was recovered, no items were missing from purse, and it was returned to the victim at the scene.

No weapon was involved in this crime.

The suspect is not a Decatur resident.

Calling “BS” on the “Safest City” Ranking

Sorry, but I’m going to have to disagree with my journalistic superiors on this one.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, there’s a Real Clear Politics article making the rounds the last couple days that landed on the AJC’s “Most Popular” page this morning, which ranks Atlanta as the nation’s second least safe city, just behind Memphis, TN.

Someone please stop the madness!

It may be an unpopular position amongst a general population who feel less safe than they did a year ago (due in large part to the rash of highly public crimes), to argue against anything that validates our fear…but someone has to do it.

First of all, this ranking is crap for the same reason that so many other city rankings are crap – because every city’s limits and annexation laws are different.  Some city limits span their entire metropolitan area, while others – like Atlanta – are centered only around the city’s core and represent a flippin’ 10th of the metro-area population.  So when “Real Muddy Rankings” reports that they’ve crunched some numbers based on FBI data (which warns against doing such things) and RANKED city crime based on % of their general population, we MUST immediately call BS, or note the disparity and perhaps dig deeper into the data. NOT report on it like it’s a credible study!

Let me be clear, I have no problem with comparing Atlanta’s 2008 to 2007 stats and reporting that property crime is up while violent crime is down.  However, none of the articles I’ve seen actually give priority to this reliable data.  Yes, they note that the ranking is “disputed”, but only after they’ve colored the entire article with the “second least safe” headline.  And then to add insult to injury, they treat violent crime and property crime as equals.  Like they are at all comparable!  Am I the only one that would rather be mugged than stabbed?

Yes, crime is something Atlanta needs to get a better hold of.  Recent cutbacks in law enforcement certainly won’t help improve anything.  But I ask the news media to be more responsible about reporting this data and resist easy, sensationalized headlines.
