Pack of Dogs Killing Cats in Decatur Heights/Glenwood Estates

June 7, 2008 | 8:39 am

Shawn writes in with this report from the east side of Decatur…

It appears we have 3 potentially dangerous dogs on the loose in the Decatur Heights/ Glenwood Estates area. In the course of the last 3 weeks several cats have been killed in this area via canine attack.

On several occasions over the last 3 weeks there have been eyewitness accounts of 3 dogs (2 pit bulls & 1 pit and lab mix) making the rounds. None of the dogs have collars.

Decatur police has been notified on several occasions. They have in turn contacted animal control who was then suppose to contact the individuals making the reports. No return calls from animal control thus far.

The neighborhood theory is that the dogs may be living in the reserve.

Follow-up contact with the Police requesting increased surveillance has been requested. Hopefully they will respond before the dogs turn their attention to larger prey.

Sounds like Decatur Heights residents might want to keep their cats inside until this situation is taken dealt with.

Is this DeKalb or Decatur Animal Control?

Sorry for the cats but out in the wild they just become part of the food chain. I like cats, but people should realize that “Fluffy” may be a cuddly housepet indoors…but outdoors it is a viscious killer that creates serious imbalance in our eco-system. Cats are strong and well fed in our domestic envionments and are no match for chipmunks, spiders, snakes, various insects, etc. All cats should be left indoors, particularly at night.

Rick, as one of my dear friends lost her ten-year-old cat to this wild dog pack on Thursday, I take great offense at your “sorry for the cats” statement. Most people do not consider living life on a quiet cul-de-sac to be “out in the wild.” Tigger loved hot weather; he rarely would ever come inside during the warmer months. We’re grateful that he had a relatively long, happy life before being viscously killed.

Seems to be a coyote problem (too)-they’ve been spotted by neighbors in the woods at the end of Melrose Drive. Couple of cats were victims.
