Tax Day Traffic

April 15, 2008 | 9:31 pm

Traffic was backed up Ponce from the Post Office all the way up to Commerce this evening, as last minute tax filers rushed to meet the deadline.

Just another reason to harbor resentment towards the Decatur Post Office!

I just went by there tonight on a late jog. The situation looked very much the same at 11:30pm.

But what the post off ice didn’t have yesterday was the Libertarian protest group. Someone used to always dress as the statue of liberty and hold a sign that said “if 10% is good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for the IRS!”

Or maybe just resentment against procrastinators…. ¿were they surprised when April 15 came to pass?

Yes, I’ve always liked the Decatur post office. Try getting anything done at the PO in L5P and you’ll realize how good we have it.

The post office shouldn’t be blamed for all the people waiting until the last minute to file. I think the USPS does a great job and all the post office staff I encounter are friendly and helpful. They get an unjustified bad rap all too often.

Yeah, the resentment statement was very tongue-in-cheek…and kind of a shout out to decaturmom, who’s expressed frustration with the Decatur P.O in the past. The last minute filers are the obvious culprits.

It’s no Starbucks, but for the most part, post office workers are friendly and helpful.

Since Dekalb residents have an extension to May 19 becasue of the tornadoes, why was everybody in such a hurry?

Yeah, I picked up on the shout-out, decaturite ;-) . I guess if I’m going to rag on the Decatur PO, I should also send props out to the Avondale PO, where the clerks are, in my experience, much friendlier and more helpful.

If people at the Decatur Post Office would not block traffic waiting for a parking spot up close, there would be far less traffic problems there. There is another parking lot just next door that you can use, but, oh my, it might require walking a half a block! Oh my!

“It’s no Starbucks” ? Have you been to the Starbucks in Decatur lately? I’ll take the PO for friendliness. The terminal “hipness” at the SB does not adjust to friendly.

A funny thing happens when a place like Starbucks Decatur gets a little too comfortable and detached in the role of corporate coffee giant — someone else comes along to serve largely the same niche, only much better.

In this case, the winner is clearly Dancing Goats. Corporate giants don’t always crush the little guy. In a place like Decatur, criteria like independence, friendliness and more effective connection with customers still matter.

Decaturguy, when I took these pics both lots were completely full…and cars were slowly filling up the Angel parking lot.

I didn’t necessarily mean the Starbucks in Decatur Decaturian. Dancing Goats is way too close to my house and much better quality to go to the Square. That said, in my experience, Starbucks is the most consistent chain across the city/country when it comes to customer service.

And while I love Dancing Goats coffee, its location, and the fact that its a much smaller operation than Sbux, their customer service is often lacking. Not unfriendly…but not exactly friendly either. I wonder if they get full medical like Starbucks baristas.
