I was driving past the Avondale MARTA station development, and I believe that is now being called “Amber.” That will give us the Artisan, Alexan, Arlo, and now Amber.

Hey developers, I think we are ready for the B’s now!

B is for losers! Decatur brings its A-Game.

The Artisan, Alexan, and Arlo all appeal to various shades of upper-middle-class aspiration.
Amber sounds like a barfly from the 70s.
May I suggest the Bennett, the Benjamin, or Brownstone if we’re going for B’s?
I don’t like any of these names, but at least they’re keeping with a certain theme.

Alexan sounds like a material a countertop is made of, and Arlo sounds like a puppy or cute Uncle. At least I know what an Artisan is.

Meta-question of the day. Why is there less commenting on the Friday Free-For-All posts than there used to be? Have certain key people move away? Is Decaturish utilizing all the good comments now? Or, my suspicion is that Decaturites are just commented out. We’ve been talking about so many issues for so long, like a marriage entering its 3rd decade, we just know way too much about our city at this point.

Im a lurker here (for years) and very much appreciate DM as a source of info though I seldom post anything. I think you’re right that certain key posters have moved away. Also I wonder if people are using NextDoor more (not me).

Yup, Facebook has replaced blogs for many. I prefer DM–fewer cat photos and surveys to determine what kind of American Girl doll you are most like.

I believe it is because we have solved all of Decatur’s problems.

Now we’re left only to arguing about not having any problems. And the alphabet.

I’ve only been around for six years or so, but definitely (for one thing) a number of key people have moved away and/or are commenting less frequently. Not sure what the record is (stat-keeper?), but this one had 184 comments from February 2012. http://www.decaturmetro.com/2012/02/10/free-for-all-friday-21012/. Also, JC, I just “liked” one of your posts from this date in history. Did you sense it?

There are certainly a lot more options for commenting than there used to be. And it’s true that some of the most frequent commenters moved away.

However, to maintain that level of commenting also requires constant feeding of the beast. You need to instill habits in people to check-in often and be in the habit of responding. That’s a lot of work. Not to mention all the moderating that goes along with it to make people feel welcome, heard, etc. I’d sort of burnt out a bit on that a couple of years back.

So while I think that part of the slowdown is due to the greater availability of alternatives, I’ve also embraced it as a way to refocus the site a bit.

I moved away and don’t comment much anymore, but still check in from time to time. Though the increased number of online options like Nextdoor is a good explanation for the fewer comments, what about the possibility that some people are leaving social media altogether? I have several friends who aren’t on social media at all anymore, and even more who don’t use Facebook. The # one reason by far is politics. I think many people who don’t see their family often (particularly people like me with family in rural areas) were able to mostly ignore their family’s abhorrent politics before Facebook, and have decided to go back to that state of willful ignorance.

On other long-standing online groups I am a member of (some for a decade+), the message volume is clearly shifting to social media. Doesn’t matter if it is NextDoor or Facebook, I think people want that form of interface and instant notifications.

Question about the Commerce road diet. The images so far seem to have it ending at the First Baptist Church. Is it only for that half of Commerce–not the part that has baby Kroger?

      Thanks.

That’s correct. Commerce east of Clairemont around town and under the tracks is a state highway and GDOT won’t — currently — allow for it. Decatur controls the west side of Commerce.

Plans are drawn to extend the road diet to Church St. but the city is waiting for the BOA property to be developed first.

GDOT’s not allowing the cycle track between Clairemont and Church so, with the support of the owners, that block segment’s being moved out of the ROW and onto the edge of the BOA property.

I noticed that the old car dealership at 1744 Scott which had been renovated with a sign calling it US 1 Discounts, is now up for sale. What’s going on with that property?

With all of the excavation in Decatur, particularly around the high school, has anyone found any Civil War artifacts?
And does anyone know of any Civil War trenches or battlements? I remember hearing of some around Avery Street, but don’t know exactly where.

Really? that’s cool! My next run I’m jogging by to see if I can find it…I was just driving by the development by the school and wondering the same thing. Not so much civil war stuff, but anything associated with the old houses that used to line the street.

The Scott/Clairemont intersection was actually fine at 9 AM this morning. Everyone shifting from telework to driving to the workplace again must have already passed through. I guess it paid to be late for work.
