I have been here since 1989. There has always been a ton of crime. Around 1998, my husband had a gun pulled on him in front of our house (being the tough?? guy that he is, he told the guy to go ahead and f’ing shoot him if he had the balls. Luckily, the guy did not).

Violent crime is actually down over the last ten years:

Peter (sorry for the tardy reply– hopefully you’ll still see this)-

I’m pretty sure it’s just each Depts’ preference on which mapping program they’re using. Also, I believe (but not 100% sure) that DPD was the first of the nearby jurisdictions to start using such a program. The main thing that matters is that all of the local law enforcement agencies– including MARTA, Agnes Scott, Emory too– do actively collaborate on sharing information. DPD, APD, and DeKalb have also begun pooling resources like fingerprint analysis and ballistics to speed up processing.

As for increasing the number of DPD officers, nothing’s been brought up at City Meetings. Now’s the time for it to happen if it’s going to, though– the City Budget’s underway. Peter, if there’s a question in your mind about how excellent the DPD is at what they do, then please please please! sign up for the next Citizens Police Academy. Along with getting a good overview of how each area of DPD operates and meeting some damn fine folks, you’ll also get to do a ride along and witness firsthand what goes into each interaction.

Decatur is commonly described as “4 square miles.” Isn’t that about 2 miles by 2 miles not “4 miles by 4 miles?”

Decatur is about four miles by four miles with the big city and all that entails surrounding it. It is important to know what is going on around you and to not turn a blind eye to it. I think sometimes people who live here think it is so safe, but it isn’t as safe as they think or maybe as it once was.
