Given the direction of demographics, there is much merit to having this vision come to fruition. Love the idea of not having to leave the community when it seems time to sell the house...and condos are but one step in the journey...

Some folks is city folks n some folks ain't ... There's nothin Mayberry-like about it anymore ...'Build it and they will come...'... They did .. And I'm gone ... OTP=Over The Progressives, Out To Pasture, On To Peacefulness ...and you can keep your huddled masses, public transportation, crime, crowded schools, nosie neighbors, and slice of idealistic heaven... Tried it for 20 years and the thrill is gone... As for the good food... that just magically appears on my dining room table and we can actually hear each other speak while we dine! Enjoy Mayberry... Reality is subjective!

I'm all for walkable, sustainable high density ITP as long as we can keep the friendly Mayberry sense of community. I love chatting with ex-Mayor Floyd at Dancing Goats, running into my kids' teachers at Fleet Feet, running into church friends at school curriculum night, seeing work colleagues at the Book Festival, and all the permutations of those events and folks. Density done right can keep that sense of community. When I took Decatur 101, several Artisan residents were also taking it.

Here's my vision for one of the many parcels of land that are going to get built and everyone is agonizing over--a continuous care community with senior independent living, assisted living, and nursing home all part of the same community. Schoolchildren could volunteer there, their grandparents living there could come do Mystery Reader at school, residents don't need a car because they can walk, cycle, or take a senior van whereever, and no one has to leave Decatur ever if they don't want to. (Of course, there's that little issue of $ but I'm fantasizing here.)

Bye, bye Sharkey. We're all aware that we are creating a active vibrant urban center that caters to lots of slices of society. You may have missed that. We won't be seeing you OTP, as there is nothing there that is appealing, at all. Here we have choices - commute options, restaurant options (that actually cook food), types of neighborhood and home options, etc. There - not so much. You can stop in and say hi when you are searching for some where good to eat.

After living in or visiting cities from Chicago to Paris to Boston, I am just not afraid of density...as long as it is well-planned for. It takes a certain level of density to support better mass transportation options...and retail...and restaurants....and grocers...

Enjoy OTP!
