If you have ever been one one of those locomotives while its running it is impressive. Some over 6000 horsepower.

Also most railroads have dash cams now on their trains or will so have them just for these types of events. I know AMTRAK have them on all their long distance trains.

The front of the engines are built pretty heavy to withstand impacts, too.
And, you’re right, it can have a psychological impact on the train crew, even in a minor accident. The engineer and the conductor would have been in the cab.

That’s a pretty small dent for a locomotive. I also feel for the engineer and conductor. The train can’t swerve and, unless they get a lot of warning, no way to stop in time to avoid hitting something on the tracks. The stress of knowing you’re about to hit something and not knowing if you’re going to be hurt or how badly or if the train is hurting others has to be awful.
