ohmahgerd, what a snifflepalooza today at Oakhurst’s third grade graduation.

such a lovely ceremony led by an incredibly loving and gifted group of teachers.
aside from hearing comments about each student by classmates and teachers, my personal highlight was all 100(?) of them playing Miles Davis’ “So What” on their recorders.

what an amazing school community we have.
proud of all our students young and old.

Saturday school is a blessing. And for those not in the know, it’s not just for low performers. It’s for any student trying to do even better, A to A+ is fine (or is it 7 of 9 to 8 of 9 or 3.8 GPA to 4.0 GPA? Actually the students are so confused, I think they’re just there to learn, whatever the #$%^& grade). No stigma, lots of good stuff.

Congrats DHS teachers, staff and administrators. There could be many explanations behind the high percentage but I was always impressed with the work going on in the Learning Center and Saturday School. Both programs provide opportunities for students who sometimes “just don’t get it” and those who want individual attention. During this past school year, I would meet the Close Up kids on Saturday morning in front of DHS for service projects and would run into quite a few students who would volunteer to attend Saturday School to get extra help, catch up, or get one on one tutoring. I was impressed with the motivation of the students but also the number of teachers who volunteered to give up their Saturday mornings to help kids.

I agree! It seems like every week we find out some other great piece of information about our school district. I feel very lucky to be able to call Decatur home – for many reasons in addition to the fantastic schools.
