Again, I say: fungal infection. A bad one can be with you for years. Not trying to dissuade you or anyone else, just puzzled that so many people (nearly every female I know, frankly) are so unconcerned.

Another concern that I have with nail salons is toxicity. Have read credible reports that brands of polish supposedly free of toluene, formaldehyde and that third toxin I can't remember, were found in random tests to still contain all three. And the remover is extremely toxic, I've read that you shouldn't use it on yourself more than a couple of times a month and then with good ventilation. It's got to be bad for the people working in the salons. Don't get me wrong, I keep my toenails polished in the summertime. But I take a break in the winter because I believe what I've read about it being unhealthy to keep polish (let alone fake nails) on all the time.

And have to mention this, just because it was such a spectacle: yesterday I saw a woman wearing false fingernails that were as long as her fingers. I do not exaggerate. She was working as a retail cashier and I was completely mesmerized watching her use a pen and handle cash. Wanted so badly to take a picture, but was afraid if I offended her, she'd slow down even more and it really would take forever to get out of there.

Oh, I definitely recognize the sanitary risk but we all have our "Favorite Local..." addictions and vices. Alcohol has been linked to a vice or two. I don't believe that hepatitis B has ever been passed via pedicures, has it? Via tattoo parlors, yes. Via ear piercing, plausible. But I believe that nail salons have mostly been associated with skin infections and cellulitis. Not that that's good. But hepatitis B is less casually transmitted.

Another vote for Midtown Nails! The last time I went, their regular pedicure was $20. It's been a long time, though...my feet are a disaster. :(

I'm with Bijoux 100%. Love, love, love a good foot massage (or a mediocre one, or any one I can get) but there's nothing appealing about the idea of somebody digging around my toenails with the same instruments used on other people's feet. I'm afraid of getting a fungal infection. In fact, this whole thread gives me the heebie-jeebies. Toenails and commuting--that's all we've got this week?
