I rode the MARTA train from Downtown to Downtown (Decatur to Atlanta) and back for years and loved it. I miss it. Rarely felt unsafe. Worst of it was the occasional rat sighting ont Five Points tracks. Nowhere near as death-defying as riding the NYC subway.

I ride a MARTA bus (#2 Ponce de Leon route) every work day in the evening. I am not sure what you mean with your statement that “riding MARTA, especially at night is a sign of real courage”. I am not especially courageous, but I do know how to survive. My MARTA bus ride is a “great adventure”, and I count it as one of the best parts of my day. I regularly meet people I would not otherwise have a chance to meet, and I think I am better for that. You might try “broadening” your horizons.
