I know we are in dead horse territory, but the honest to God's truth in this matter is that some people are just rude as hell.

I will never forget, I was in a crowded car on a Marta train and a blind lady and her dog get on. The conductor came over the train intercom and said the train will not be moving until someone gives this woman a seat, and no one moved. He leaves his station, walks into the car, and repeats himself, and still no one gave up a seat, not even the jack***** in the handicapped seats! You have a 100 people in 1 space, and not one person can get up and give a blind woman a seat. I'm sorry to say, but people are just rude as hell.

I have lived up north, down here, and been far and wide to places so desolate using the public restroom was peeing in a hole in the floor. And in all those places a "hi" or similar gets something back.

People do space out, but witnessing the rudeness that people show no hesitancy is displaying on a daily basis (loud as hell cellphone & restaurant talkers), giving people the benefit of the doubt almost seems naive. In general this is a very simple matter of manners, lots of people have them, but an equal number of people don't.
