Anyone who accepts the opinion of a blogger as fact does so at his own peril. Perhaps he thinks it is “one of Decatur’s luxurious hotels” and he can certainly state his opinion. Plus, everything is relative. To many people, a place with a roof and 4 walls is a luxury, not to mention running water, indoor plumbing, electricity and a TV. And don’t forget about the swimming pool!

Just wondering. What about violation of “truth in advertising” laws? Except that the untruths are posted by a third party, not the lodging being advertised. Just wondering if there’s any legal check at all on this kind of disinformation dissemination. Certainly demonstrates that one must verify information obtained from the Web before making decisions using it!

Criminal liability? What is the crime? I don’t think so. What if you came to Decatur based on all the recent good press and real estate advertisements to visit a local eatery on the Square and you get shot right in front of City Hall. Any liability there?

I wonder if the blog owner(s)/writer(s) have any liability in all this? If a family spent a lot of money to travel to Belvedere Park based on the misunderstanding that they were going to a luxury resort in the City of Decatur, could they claim fraud? If their “luxury accomodations” turned out to full of drug dealing and prostitution and they were mugged or physically harmed, would the blog have criminal liability?

This certainly is as good an example of any of the limitations of unreviewed information on the web. Maybe a good example for students who don’t see why they cannot just google the information for their projects.
