I think anyone who is on the run will at one point contact someone in their family, whether that person tells the rest of the family, who knows. I doubt that anyone on the run for a month will have not contacted any of the family members. Even if it’s a “tell so and so i’m ok/not dead” message.

But he’ll still be in jail until he’s my age. I’m 56. It’s a tragedy for Khalif Edwards, but some actions can’t be forgiven, period.

This wasn’t just “some cop” he decided to run over and run from. This was our cop, my cop and your cop. A cop who was prized by the community he served. And when this happened he wasn’t even (technically) on city time — he was working for the Kirkwood Safety Patrol. He was putting in extra time even at the risk of being said to have “gone native.”

Khalif Edwards made a mistake. It’s the last one he’ll ever make.

His aunt is a former president of the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association — long before Decatur was a gleam in the eye of many current residents. They are stalwart members of our community. They and the rest of the Edwards family were as appalled as anyone at what happened and took every possibly occasion to urge Khalif to turn himself in. Khalif’s grandmother, who is a sharp and strong woman, but a good distance from her tender years, was constantly approached by the Decatur police about Khalif’s whereabouts. She had no idea where he was and made it clear she would turn him in if he appeared at her home.
