Of course, the chances of catching the perpetrators “when someone calls and a patrol officer happens to be in the area” are severely diminished when potential witnesses wait several hours before bothering to call the police in the first place.

The officer wrote the report and the supervisor filed it. The case will not be assigned to a detective or investigated at all. This is because its totally unsolvable and a waste of time.
The only way people like this are caught is in the act by patrol officers or when someone calls and a patrol officer happens to be in the area. Dekalb Co PD is very understaffed and calls like this often arent even dispatched for 10 or 20 minutes becuase officers are all handling more serious calls. Kinda sad but its not the cops fault, there just arent enough of them. This is why it pays to live in a place with a more responsive city police department.

You were very lucky. Leaving your cars unlocked is a mistake. We used to leave our cars unlocked in the driveway so they wouldn’t bust a window and even left some change so perps wouldn’t get mad and slash the seats. But they return to hit easy targets. In our case, they came back and stole the car a week later. Gave us the impetus to clean out the garage which now safely houses our cars.

I noticed it Monday morning but not sure what time it happened because my car alarm didn’t go off. Seems like car alarms never work when they are supposed to.
