I went hiking there with the family and dogs two weeks ago. As a native this has always been one of my favorite spots. I have very mixed opinions on the development of the boardwalk. They have literally cut a 20′ swath through main trail and completely destroyed some others. I get trying to make it accessible, but seems they have done more destruction than ehnancement to me. I am not a fan!

The old ruins are the remains of the old DeKalb County water works.

Accoring to the Urban Exploration Resource… “the city of Decatur. This was accomplished by damming the creek to form a reservoir. The Old Decatur Waters Works served as a treatment and pumping facility. The Old Decatur Water Works first saw use just after the turn of the twentieth-century. The main administrative building was built in around 1906. In 1942 the water works provided area residents and businesses with up to 1.8 million gallons of water per day. In 1951 DeKalb County Commissioners tried to issue bonds to restore the park. The commissioners were unsuccessful in their efforts to restore the park and in the 1960’s the dam was destroyed and the reservoir was allowed to drain. “

Kinda cool-looking, and kids especially think it’s neat.
