If it had happened on the square in Decatur, there'd be much more talk about it. But it happened in the city of Atlanta, along with 6 other shootings/murders over the weekend. Just another reason why many of us live here, and not there.

Yeah, I don't think that people aren't concerned about people being victimized near our neighborhood or city. But these things seem to happen somewhere in Atlanta so frequently. And what exactly are we supposed to do about it? If I get on here and lament that this happened, it doesn't solve the crime or prevent other crimes, does it?

I think it's a bad thing that someone was brutalized near my city. In fact, I think it's a bad thing when anyone is murdered or brutalized, near where I live, or anywhere else. The fact that I don't comment publicly does not mean I don't care. I agree with Karass.

What does cause this sort of crime? Unemployment? Lack of parental role models? Inadquate schools? Too many children born into families without fathers? Video games? Inadequate or ineffective police?

Now, commenting on Dollar General or other matters, that may influence an opinion.

To be honest, I think it's denial. We can hope that we can have some control over what happens within our city borders, i.e. through influencing our elected officials or city administrators, or through civic action. But Kirkwood, even though it is adjacent to our city and many of us swim at the East Lake YMCA, is not under our control.

Denial is an ill-advised but common reaction to an issue that overwhelms us. It's how I sometimes feel about global warming or international terrorism. My itty bitty recycling of newspapers or pennies for UNICEF seem ineffective so I don't even want to read about it.

Interesting perspective, J. Murdock. Unfortunately, in my opinion, I doubt this is a case of people being shocked into silence.

People usually comment on a post that strikes a chord with them, and I just found it remarkable that a murder and beating in/near our neighborhoods did not warrant more conversation/concern.
