"Dirty"--that one makes no sense at all. I wear professional work clothes on MARTA daily and have never had a problem with dirt. A couple of times there's been a seat no one could sit in because of an air-conditioner drip. But the MARTA train is cleaner than the floors of 60-80% of the kid-friendly minivans in Decatur! I've got to admit that the Five Points Station isn't shiny and new looking, especially down on the tracks where I've seen an occasional rat running across the tracks but the most of the rest of the stations are more "outdoors" and pleasanter. Heck, NYC subways have entire unique species of rats in them and you still see well-heeled, well-dressed folks on the trains.

The number 2 was how I got from Decatur to Midtown and L5P as a teenager, underage and hoping to slip into the Point or the L5P Pub. It was how my boyfriend and I actually got to see each other. This makes me sad :(

My wife and I have heard the same comments. Granted, Marta is not convenient for some people, but from those who it would be I have heard basically two comments: They are afraid of crime or it is "dirty." I've never heard anyone say they love their cars too much to ride Marta. Never.
When I point out that statistically they are far more likely to be in a serious car accident than be the victim of a minor crime on Marta, they usually just shrug. As for the "it's dirty" argument, I don't get that one at all (I once asked someone if they planned on dining on the train), so I suspect that is just code for something else.
