– Signage should indicate to me exactly where I am in relationship to someplace else, especially if I’m not familiar with the area. That’s why I preferred the MARTA signage for East-West line and North-South line instead of Blue, Green, Red, and Gold lines. One must have a prior understanding of the color scheme to follow it.
– In that vein, “I-285 North” or “I-285, North, Greenville” tells me that I will eventually get up to the Dunwoody area and I-85. But since I am on a circle, it doesn’t tell me which part of the circle I am on since anywhere on the circle will eventually connect to anywhere else on the circle.
– If however, a sign were to say “I-285 North, Clockwise”, I would know that I must be on the western half of the loop, heading north. Otherwise, the sign would say “I-285, North, Counterclockwise” and I would be on the east side of the loop heading north.
– Since “Clockwise” and “Counterclockwise” are long words that would take up too much space on signs, one could use little curved arrow symbols like on medicine bottle caps.

Since I have never seen this kind of signage anywhere, and I’ve been a bunch of places, many of which have loops, beltways, perimeters, and/or roundabouts, I suspect that my way of thinking about signage is not widely shared!
