The scary thing about “The Corrections” was that I knew a family like the fictional family Franzen depicted … he is an excellent writer … and I am definitely going to volunteer for the Decatur Book Festival.

OK. I know it’s an old post, but this is driving the editor in me nuts. “Freedom” will be Franzen’s fourth novel, not his second book, as stated above. He’s also published a memoir and a collection of essays.

I agree that The Corrections was a terrific book. I also enjoyed Franzen’s book of essays, How to Be Alone, which includes a followup to his run-in with Oprah Winfrey. One of his earlier novels, The 27th City was set in St. Louis, and reads much differently than The Corrections. Warning: his latest book of essays The Discomfort Zone did not receive the accolades of his other books. Looking forward to the visit and the new book.

I can’t wait to read this book. The Corrections was terrific, hard to believe it’s been since 2001. Very excited that Mr. Franzen will kick off the book fest.
