Something tells me that drivers who aren’t giving cyclists 3 feet now are highly unlikely to do so if we pass this law. You either give a damn about the safety of others, or you don’t. I don’t stop for pedestrians because it is the law. I just don’t want to kill them.

That said, I find that most people already give ample room when they pass. Not all, of course. But most. Driver pull out in front of me from driveways, etc., a lot more often than buzzing me on the left.

If you ask this cyclist we should leave aside the 3 foot law in favor of the 2-abreast rule. While it would provide a safety margin when followed it would be practically unenforcable.

Thanks for the post. The 3 foot Safe Passing Bill is in jeopardy. Cyclists are being asked to drop current language that allows riders to ride 2 abreast on 4 lane roads in exchange for the 3 foot safe passing distance. And Rep. Stephanie Stuckey Benfield has just introduced HB 1381 – the Better Biking Bill – which adds bicycle lanes, other items and corrections to the current Georgia code.

No telling where these bills will go – but great reasons to ride on Tuesday, March 23rd!
