Cynical is certainly one window through which to view it… ^O^

Yep, your assessment of Boy’s desire is consistent with that of conventional society. And likely for most boys-and-girls (and hopefully boys-and-boys and girls-and-girls nationwide in the future), having that paper, that public affirmation is the most logical thing to do.

My POV just leaves room for the possibility that Boy can end up feeling the same way about more than one Girl. as could Girl feel the same way about other people that she does Boy.

@sitting pugs, Ouch! Why so cynical? Maybe Boy never wanting to lose girl again ==> desire for a freely given, publicly declared promise of eternal devotion, in front of god, friends and family. Or, as Joni Mitchell more succinctly put it, “To say ‘I love you’ right out loud.”
